A warm summer’s night in early 1995 and two young uniformed police officers, STEVE OWEN and JACQUI JAMES, are on patrol in St Kilda. Events about to unfold will dominate their lives for the next nine years.
Called to a party where a man has been shot dead, STEVE and JACQUI are told by eyewitnesses – two sisters – that the killer is known underworld figure ALPHONSE GANGITANO, a member of the notorious CARLTON CREW. Homicide detective GARRY BUTTERWORTH attends the scene and he and STEVE persuade the reluctant sisters to make statements against the gangster.
Assisted by his best mate JASON MORAN, youngest of the criminal MORAN CLAN, ALPHONSE tries to track down the pesky witnesses but they have disappeared, whisked away into the Police Witness Security program. All seems lost for the man they call the Black Prince of Lygon Street.
However the two sisters have been dumped in a lonely caravan park a long way from anywhere with zero security. Scared out of their wits and jumping at shadows, they have plenty of time to contemplate the risks of testifying against ALPHONSE. After a nervous week they contact JASON to make peace. He sends his driver, CARL WILLIAMS, to collect them and the girls find themselves delivered to the offices of ALPHONSE’s lawyer … where the Black Prince makes them an offer they can’t refuse: recant their witness statements and in return take an all expenses paid trip overseas.
The sisters dealt with, the case of murder against ALPHONSE has to be dropped. However he must now deal with his mates in the CARLTON CREW. Unhappy that the already high profile ALPHONSE has attracted further unwelcome attention to their activities, CARLTON CREW elder statesmen MICK GATTO, MARIO CONDELLO and GRAHAM “THE MUNSTER” KINNIBURGH want him to lay low for a while.
Ego badly bruised, ALPHONSE needs a win. So he approaches JASON for a helping hand. The owner of a Melbourne nightclub ALPHONSE is standing over owes him twenty grand. If they can frighten the guy into stumping up the money he will be back in the game. Up for anything, JASON agrees.
But the club owner can’t be found. ALPHONSE gives vent to all of his frustrations and he and JASON wreak havoc in the club. No one is safe from the violent onslaught, with innocent bystanders randomly beaten and brutally assaulted. With JASON having fled the scene, ALPHONSE is captured by the police – STEVE and JACQUI again – and his world implodes.
