Charlie Headlind wanders onto the street in pain – he is burned very badly and screams for someone to help his neighbours.
When Detectives Lupo and Bernard arrive, they find two exchange students from England stabbed to death and then burned post-mortem with cooking oil.
The landlord says Headlind is bipolar and paranoid, and when he dies from his injuries, the cops think he may have started the fire. But a closer inspection of Headlind’s body reveals he only had burns on his hands – suggesting that he tried to put the fire out, not knowing that his neighbours had already been killed.
