Reality TV

The cancellation of Big Brother in my opinion was a great decision. The show was popular for a while as it was a new and fresh idea and people were into the idea of following a persons every moment for enjoyment.

That then outlasted its welcome.

Now with Australian Idol, i think the same has happened. With ratings dropping remarkably over recent seasons i think enough is enough and let it die on its own terms. Obviously there is some people who find the whole idea fantastic but others like myself may tune in for the first few episodes but then lose interest as they all seem to sound the same year after year. Then you may tune in for the final decision and then its doen and dusted for another year.

I can appreciate that its a great opportunity for potential singers to put their name on the map and shine a little bit of light in their direction. However, other than Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy, have any of these artists gone on the make a name for themselves?

Lets run through some names:

Axle Whitehead – was doing good on Video Hits – then he goes an flashes at an awards ceremony then all went down hill

Damien Leith – I am a great fan of his and the decision that the final two came down to two completely different characters however after his first hit then he disappeared….why? Jessica is still making music that is up there in the charts. Shouldn’t he be doing the same? Not releasing one, maybe two songs a year? maybe hes recording, maybe hes taking a break but for a winner of a tv show, shouldn’t he be out more?

Strange! Now Masterchef seems to be the new. Something the everyday person can relate to and do. But even that will end the same way. Instead of building on its success, shortly after the competition finishes put on another one involving celebrities. Shove it in the faces of the viewer for another 10 weeks when one would expect the viewer to say “that was good now for something different…”

All comes back to ratings, not what the consumer wants!

They need people to buy the product. You say you’re a great Damien fan, but you don’t know that Damien released a new album in October? Go and buy it. Or at least listen to it. Some manage to retain the public’s interest, some don’t. A short time back, Shannon was seen as the poster boy for ‘people are better off coming second’. Right now? Nothing. But that’ll probably change as soon as he releases new product – or maybe it won’t. Axle’s on a TV show nightly. Jess has had great success so far, let’s hope she can do it again. Also, just because artists aren’t always in your face, it doesn’t mean they’re not successful. Guy is multi-talented and will be producing and songwriting for others when he’s not performing himself, especially now he has his own studio – but he’s a rare one. But I bet you anything, no matter how successful he is in anything he does, unless his face is everywhere all the time, there’ll be people saying he’s a hasbeen.

I agree with Nessa, for a fan of Damien’s you seem a tad unaware of his career. He didn’t disappear. He’s had a #1 and a #2 album since Idol and his latest orignals album is called Remember June and the second single (Forgive, Forget) is due to be released to radio shortly. It’s a new, rockier sound for him. He tours relentlessly and is continuing to do so. Also, when he releases is not up to him, that’s Sony.

It seems like Damien Leith is always touring – he toured from May until December last year, and I heard that he’s got about 80 shows planned for next year already (including some with Ronan Keating and Tina Arena). Also, he’s released 4 albums since Idol, and it’s only been 3 years. Wes Carr has been touring with Ian Moss and getting his name out there, and Lisa Mitchell has released 2 EPs and an album, toured with Jason Mraz and others, been nominated for an ARIA award and has had success in the UK.

But like you say, there have been others who haven’t had as much success. I guess the show can only help you to get your name out there, but after that, your career depends on how much work you put in, and how much your record company is willing to promote you. For example, I haven’t seen Damien Leith being promoted much lately (and neither, it seems, have you), but as I mentioned earlier, he has been recording and touring (and has even found the time to write a couple of novels), and I really think the lack of promotion is the cause of his “disappearance”, rather than it being any fault of his own, or even of the Australian Idol program.

Agree with the above commenters. Jess Mauboy has had great success with her first album full of radio friendly dance tracks..3 years after idol.

Damien Leith now has 4 albums under his belt- the latest – finally something he wanted to do after being hamstrung by his record label..Remember June is all original and bloody fantastic. Get yourself a copy.

Guy has been going great guns with his latest single after being quiet for a while. It ebbs and flows.

Australian radio airplay is a joke. If you aren’t putting a dance track then you have little hope of charting.

And if you are not sleeping around, divorcing, or a girl kissing a girl you’re hard pressed to get your name out there these days.
