If you are staying in on New Year’s Eve or are wondering what to leave on TV for the non-social members of your party or simply out of curiosity – here is our guide to what is on TV on Thursday night – December 31.
Seven.
If watching a four hour movie is your idea of closing the old year, then Seven is the answer for you with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on air from 8.30pm, finishing at 12.30am. That is followed by Room For Improvement at 12.30 then infomercials from 1am.
Nine.
Nine is the channel to have on for the Sydney fireworks at both 9pm and midnight. In between the two fireworks displays, Nine will countdown the top 30 music videos of the year. At 7.30, Peter Harvey hosts “the Noughties – A Decade in Review” looking back at all the events of the last ten years. The 9pm fireworks coverage starts at 8.40, with the ARIA countdown from 9.10 and the midnight fireworks coverage from 11.40pm. At 12.10am, the movie “Can’t Stop the Music” is on.
Ten
At 7.30, Michael J Fox in the 1985 classic movie “Back to the Future” airs until 10pm. Shaun Micallef’s New Year’s Rave then sees out the year, finishing with the countdown at midnight. Following that is a special Video Hits presentation playing music videos to party the night away to. David Letterman is on at 1.45am.
ABC1
At 8.35pm you can see the Glenn Miller story, then News at 10.29pm. The year ends with Sydney Symphony with Human Nature from 10.41 – 12.10am, which is followed by “And Now For Something Completely Different”. At 1.37am, an old movie “Body and Soul” plays. Personally, I have never understood why they don’t have a New Years’ special of Rage on all night. Only when New Year’s Eve is a Friday or Saturday does the ABC have Rage on.
ABC2
ABC2 programming is essentially the same as any Thursday night. Shows are: 8.30 – the IT Crowd. 9.02 Chandon Pictures. 9.31 U2 Equals BBC. 10.23 Seal Soul Live. 11.10 The Graham Norton Show – which gets you past midnight. Then at 12.10, ABC2 is off air for the night.
ABC3
While many kids do stay up late for New Years’, their only dedicated free to air channel will not be up with them. ABC3 programming is the same as any Thursday night with Blast Lab at 7.09, Jeopardy 7.39, Blue Water high 8.05 and Heartbreak high at 8.33. ABC3 closes, as usual, at 9pm.
GO!
Go baby, Go baby, Go! From 8.30pm until 1am, it is the South Park marathon. If you are a fan, then what better way to end your year? If you are not home, then set your recorder and play them during the day as you recover. From 1am on GO!, there is 4 hours of Father of the Pride. Normal programming resumes from 5am with the Partridge Family.
7TWO
Normal programming on 7TWO with Fifth Gear at 7.30, Stargate Atlantis at 8.30, Double Shark from 9.30, then Strike Force at 11.15 followed by Monster Garage from 11.40 – 12.30am. A movie “The Saint’s Vacation” airs from 12.30 to 1.45am with AFL flashbacks from then.
SBS ONE
Nothing special on SBS ONE or TWO. Movie Boudu from 10.00 and Respect Yourself: The Stax Records story from 11.50 – 1.50am.
SBS TWO
At 9pm there is the Chorus, followed by My Wife is An Actress from 10.45 – 12.25am. Weatherwatch overnight follows.
ONE HD
Is showing sport – what else would you expect from a 24 hour sports channel? As the feed is live into all markets, there is nothing to mark it being midnight as this would have to happen at five different times. Programming for the night (EDT) includes UFC Wired at 9.30, UFC Countdown at 10.30, then F1 Rocks: Singapore at 11.30 and Omnisport at 12.30am. At 1am, it is the NASCAR Sprint Cup till 5.30. Adjust these times if you are not in eastern daylight time (eg WA is 3 hours behind so NASCAR would start at 10pm).
