9:30pm – Wednesday, March 24 on ABC1
The path to fabulous never did run smoothly…The glitzy award-winning comedy returns to strut its stuff from New York to London, the suburbs, and beyond. Inspired by the memoirs of fashionista Simon Doonan the ‘beautiful people’ are back.
Simon Doonan (Luke Ward-Wilkinson) returns to Reading from New York with a broken heart to find that his mother, Debbie (Olivia Colman), has taken in a couple of Polish women. An object in his old bedroom reminds him of his younger self.
Young Simon’s teacher sets the class a project on genealogy and a rather extraordinary picture emerges. Simon’s mother and father (Aidan McArdle) and their lodger, Auntie Hayley (Meera Syal), each give him conflicting memories of his parents’ wedding day. It finally emerges that due to a series of mishaps his parents have never actually been married.
Far from despondent, Simon and his best friend Kylie (Layton Williams) set about designing and preparing for his parents’ wedding. All goes well until his mother discovers that his father, Andy, is spending his stag night at their local pub’s Enya homage night. It was Enya who inadvertently prevented their original wedding.
Finally mum and dad are married; Kylie and Simon are bridesmaids and all including blind Auntie Hayley dressed in Nazi uniform take part in a ‘Sound of Music’ themed wedding ceremony. The reception is interrupted however by calamitous news from Simon’s sister, Ashlene (Sophie Ash), and Auntie Hayley.
Beautiful People will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, March 25 at 9:00pm Please note the DVD for this program will be sent next week http://abc.net.au/iview/
