The Music Instinct: Science & Song provides a ground- breaking exploration into how and why the human organism, and the whole ebb and flow of the cosmos, is moved by the undeniable effect of music.
This two-part series follows visionary researchers and accomplished musicians, including Bobby Ferrin, Yo-Yo Ma, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley, to the crossroads of science and culture in search of answers to music’s deep mysteries.
This series reveals that music’s universality in nature and the cosmos is far more profound than previously imagined. Whales, birds, even elephants sing and concoct melodies. The ancient Greeks’ ‘music of the spheres’ finds its 21st century counterpart in String Theory’s (‘theory of everything’) postulation of vibration: could the same vibration that creates music be the organising principle of the universe.
Through the course of the series, scientists – with the aid of philosophers, spiritual leaders, and musicians themselves – all help to provide an in-depth look at the power of music.
