8:30pm – Saturday, October 2 on ABC2
Saturday, 2 October 2010 Somewhere in the South during the final desperate days of the Civil War, a ten-year-old girl, Amy, picks mushrooms from their cool hiding place in a glen once lush and serene, but now pockmarked by shells and explosives.
Reaching for a choice mushroom, Amy is shocked to discover, instead, a bloody army boot, Union issue. Attached to it is the all-but-dead personage of Corporal John ‘McB’ McBurney, his leg grotesquely broken just below the knee. With much effort on Amy’s part the two of them stumble the few yards from the glen to the front porch of the Farnsworth Seminary for young ladies.
Miss Martha Farnsworth, the seminary’s headmistress, and her teacher-assistant, Miss Edwina Dabney, ponder what to do with the pitiable ‘blue belly’ when the students Carol, Doris , Jane, Abigail and Lizzie rush up to share the excitement.
Martha’s initial instinct is to put the blue flag on the front gate as a signal to passing Southern conscriptors that a Yankee prisoner or Confederate draft dodger has been captured. While she is supported by Doris, the militant daughter of a Southern General, Edwina and the others convince her that the graycoats would only put the Tank in prison, there to surely die. The least they can do, they decide, is tend to his wounds and bring him round before turning him in. With the help of Miss Martha’s slave, Hallie, they manage to carry the now unconscious McB inside.
Directed by Don Siegel, The Beguiled stars Clint Eastwood, Geraldine Page, Elizabeth Hartman and Jo Ann Harris.
