Episode 51 – Respect (part 1)
In this two-part story (the last two of The Bill) 14-year-old Liam Martin is stabbed on a local estate and dies in Insp. Smith’s (Smithy) Alex Walkinshaw) arms. Sgt. Callum Stone (Sam Callis) and the troops give chase but fail to catch the suspect running from the scene. CCTV footage confirms Liam was acting as a ‘mule’ in the ‘Parkway Crew’ gang for leaders Gary Wilson (Darragh Mortell) and Carlos Miller (Lewis Chase). Police trace the ambulance call to another gang member Derek Bailey (Femi Wilhelm), but he won’t talk.
CCTV shows that Jasmine Harris (Faye Daveney) – a previous informant of DC Mickey Webb (Chris Simmons) – was spotted near the murder scene, and Mickey tracks her down for an informal chat. But she feels Mickey betrayed her in their past dealings, and refuses to talk. But Jasmine is implicated when her call was the last to Liam’s phone, and she’s arrested and brought in for questioning by Superintendent Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse).
The team believes Jasmine was used by the gang to lure Liam to his eventual fate, and DC Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) gets Jasmine to admit that Carlos Miller forced her to make the call. With their only clue to the murder being a bloody footprint, Smithy and the team visit Carlos’ house in search of trainers, only to find he’s washed them and some clothing that morning. With barely enough evidence to arrest Carlos, Smithy and Stone bring him into Sun Hill for questioning. All he will admit is that it was self defence.
Meanwhile, Jasmine is released on bail, against the advice of Mickey who fears for her safety. She returns to the estate, without protection, into the arms of the gang who take savage revenge on her for talking to the police and disrespecting the gang…
Episode 52 – Respect (Part 2)
When officers find Jasmine Harris (Faye Daveney) after she’s been raped by members of the Parkway Crew they know it’s payback for talking to the police. Superintendent Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) continues questioning Carlos Miller (Lewis Chase) to make him admit that Gary Wilson (Darragh Mortell) is the leader of the gang, and that he murdered Liam Martin. Meanwhile DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel) and the team watch CCTV footage which shows Gary Wilson and Colin Simmons (Jumayn Hunter) amongst others at the scene of Jasmine’s rape. Both men are quickly arrested.
Inspector Dale Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) visits Jasmine in hospital in an attempt to get her to open up about the attack, but she’s scared and won’t talk. Along with DC Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) he tries again back at the station but she refuses to press charges. With a lack of DNA evidence and without a statement from Jasmine, the team have no option but to release Gary Wilson and Colin Simmons, and Smithy, Grace and DC Mickey Webb (Chris Simmons) watch in bewilderment as Jasmine gets into a car and drives off with the very men accused of raping her.
The team are determined to find evidence linking the cases of Liam’s murder and Jasmine’s rape and continue to search for Derek Bailey (Femi Wilhelm) who’s gone into hiding after calling the ambulance following Liam’s stabbing. Meanwhile, CSE Eddie Olosunje (Jason Barnett) finds evidence of a gun having been fired at the scene of the rape and Smithy and Sergeant Callum Stone (Sam Callis) surmise that someone in the gang fired the shot to break up the situation in defence of Jasmine. But who pulled the trigger?
Still angered that Jasmine had been allowed to return to the estate after her initial questioning about Liam’s murder (leading to her subsequent rape), Mickey Webb is determined to achieve justice for her – a previous informant of his. Anxious to make amends for letting her down and regain her trust in the police, Mickey pushes ahead in the search for Derek Bailey and chats with Ruby Collier (Shahnequa Duprey), a 13-year-old ‘mule’ used by the Parkway Crew. He manages to persuade Ruby to tell him where Derek is hiding out.
Following Ruby’s tip-off, Stone eventually finds Derek Bailey in a derelict flat, with gunshot wounds. But he comes face to face with Gary Wilson who points a gun at his head. Stone activates his panic button and an armed response unit is called to the scene, but the tension is high as he tries to get Wilson to drop the gun. Will Mickey finally be able to regain Jasmine’s respect and persuade her to make a statement? And what length will Meadows go in order to secure a confession for Liam’s murder?
