UPDATE: Apologies for mistakes in original post. Not sure how I let it get through like that. Neighbours is on at 6.30pm, not 7pm. Sorry for any confusion caused.
The season finale for Neighbours for 2010 will air at 6.30pm, Friday December 17, 2010.
This will be the last time Neighbours will be seen on Ten before moving to its new home on digital channel Eleven in 2011.
Neighbours first ran on the Seven network in 1985. In 1986, Ten bought it off Seven, airing the show weeknights at 7pm. The first year on Ten featured Kylie Minogue and Jason Donavan – Scott and Charlene – who married in 1987 in one of the shows’ highest rating episodes ever.
In 1988, Seven got back in to the nightly soap game, launching Home and Away which landed in the 6.30pm timeslot. When Home and Away moved to 7pm in 1992, Ten moved Neighbours to 6.30pm, where it has remained ever since.
Neighbours is now screened in over 50 countries. It is most successful in the UK where it was screened on BBC1 from 1986 – 2008, before moving to rival channel five.
In recent years, low ratings have prompted the call to axe Neighbours. But with such success overseas, there are no plans to stop making Neighbours any time soon. The move to Eleven means the show can still be aired in Australia without the ratings performance pressure of the main channel.
Now, the final episode of 2010 will be one of those classic end of season cliff hangers complete with a fire caused by faulty Christmas lights. It is not the first time a Neighbours season has finished a season with a fire.
Neighbours in 2011 moves to Ten’s new digital channel Eleven. Eleven launches January 11, 2011. Neighbours will remains at 6.30pm, following the Simpsons which also moves to Eleven next year as Ten revamps 6pm-7pm with an extra hour of news.
For Neighbours fans who do not yet have digital TV, suggest it is time to at least get a set top box or be happy watching catch up TV online!
And, before anyone asks, we STILL – at just over 5 weeks out – do not know if Eleven will launch in regional areas at the same time as the capital cities.
Back to Neighbours, and here is the synopsis for the final episode on Ten:
“Summer, Andrew and Tash Play with Fire”
Summer suspects Andrew was finally about to declare his love for her, but when Lyn interferes for the wellbeing of her granddaughter, Summer’s suspicious. Disobeying her, Summer calls Andrew to her house and declares she doesn’t need protecting. She wants to be with him.
After a moment of passion disregarding everything, and everyone else, the couple fall asleep in Summer’s bed. Oblivious to the imminent danger of Scully’s faulty Christmas lights, the house begins to catch fire while Tash enters the burning house in order to find Summer.
Tune into the 2010 season finale to see who survives this Ramsay Street Inferno…
7pm Weeknights on Ten, Final Fri Dec 17, 6.30pm.
