Channel Nine’s Flood Relief Appeal was hit by a phone system failure just minutes into the opening of its donation phone lines on Sunday night.
A hugely impressive $10m was raised on the night despite the celebrity call centre malfunctioning when it went active due to the number of calls received.
A Nine spokesperson said: “Within minutes of the Flood Relief Appeal phone lines opening we received 12,000 calls which resulted in the celebrity call centre phone lines malfunctioning for approximately 30 minutes.
“During this time the donation line was still active and phone lines manned by Telstra volunteers at another QLD Government location were still taking donations from people wishing to contribute to the appeal.”
Co-host Eddie McGuire informed viewers that the lines were down to the celebrity call centre and its wasn’t until 90 minutes later that they were told that the lines were open and functional again.
The issue was due to a Telstra exchange not being able to cope with the huge volume of calls in the short period of time.
