Networks break for live TV coverage of Christchurch Earthquake

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has rocked Christchurch, New Zealand, all but destroying the city’s iconic church and causing wide spread damage to the city and surrounds.

Australian TV networks have abandoned regular programming for now to cover this breaking story.

Seven, Nine and Ten all have live news, with reporters on the scene.

Both Sky News and ABC News 24 are using a direct feed of New Zealand’s TV3 for their coverage.

So far, no programming amendments have been issued by any network so it is unclear how long the coverage will continue.

TV3 and TVNZ have both announced that they will provide coverage until 6pm (4pm AEDT) and then they will have their regular news programming between 6pm and 7:30pm. Would imagine that the commercial networks would cancel all afternoon programs until their regular 4:30/5pm news.

Surprized (but happy) that ABC have picked up TV3′s coverage, they tend to use TVNZ’s coverage for NZ related events (they did for all Pike River coverage). It may be related to reports that TVNZ’s Chch studio is damaged.
