Jessica Marais is kick starting her US career in a new TV show called The Magic City. Set in the 1960s and about an organised crime gang operating out of a Miami hotel, it has been described as “Boardwalk Empire meets The Sopranos”. The former Packed To The Rafters star’s leading man is Javier Bardem lookalike, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, best known as transplant patient Denny Duquette in Grey’s Anatomy.
Marais has been coy about the 10-part series since being cast during a trip to LA this year, refusing to name or elaborate on the production. It is the brainchild of Miami native Mitch Glazer, who wrote the films Great Expectations and The Recruit and produced the Oscar winning Lost In Translation. So confident was American TV network Starz of the quality of the script and cast, The Magic City skipped the standard pilot process and got an immediate green light into production, with filming to start in Florida on July 6.
Stewart, who will return to Rafters next season, was recently seen updating his passport so he can accompany his bride-to-be. While Marais’ role is unclear, recent Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, Children Of Men actor Danny Huston and Oscar nominee Seymour Cassel are also attached to the project.
