So I hope you all enjoyed that Lady Gaga special on just before; I didn’t watch it, but I’m sure it was ‘spectacular’! Now onto the main event; another week of The Block is upon us and as we approach the half way mark of this competition, the contestants are just finishing up their second room. Who will triumph?
The episode begins with the final 24 hours of renovations and after spending the entire night awake and painting, the two head to McDonalds (conveniently a show sponsor!) for breakfast. The other teams are also running on empty with Waz deciding to sing in the shower to wake himself up to the chagrin of Tania.
I think at one point he even had a bit of a flirt with one of the sisters; is he drunk?! I think he’s just sleep deprived!
With Jenna asleep, Josh is battling on with the painting and I have to say, without all those challenges, maybe they wouldn’t be this behind!
Katrina & Amie also have a bucket load to do and Amie has left fingermarks on the new wardrobe! Scott reminds us about the twist of the week, using secondhand goods. Josh has taken to this task quite well, using pallets to create a bed. Polly finds their secret which has saved the team from buying a new one.
Reactions are mixed about the bed with Polly a little confused at his idea and Rod quite impressed at his recycling skills.
Meanwhile, Josh is out (yes in the car on sleep deprivation, not a good idea) to buy some bed covers and while the woman does his transactions, he has a sneaky sleep in one of the display beds (she even lets him, haha)!
He comes home and now Katrina & Amie are discussing his very inventive bed!
When we return from a break, Josh is asleep (in his home this time) after 29 hours on the go with Polly doing the brick wall. When Josh wakes up, a lot has been done but there’s still a lot more. The two are pessimistic about winning this week; thinking the sisters have it in the bag.
Meanwhile, Tania goes ask for Ralph magazines to decorate the room and finally finds one!
Polly & Waz’ curtain has arrived and they begin to match it with various wall colours.
Meanwhile, Keith, the foreman, calls Rod and asks him to do something (It’s very inaudible). Apparently, people have been dumping rubbish and they need to clean it up.
No one claims it as theirs, although it could be the sister’s crap who can’t answer for themselves as they are off shopping!
The contestants decide to clean up a bit, leaving a little bit for the sisters however they are all annoyed about the extra work. The girls are meanwhile still out shopping, oblivious to the drama back at the block.
Polly has brought a secondhand electrical guitar for some reason and begins to sing along to her ‘tune’. It literally clears the room!
Later on, the girls finally come home and find their section of the rubbish to be cleared waiting for them. They too don’t claim it as their’s, but clear it anyway.
With the sun going down, some teams face another late night of renovating. For the second time this season, Katrina is singing along to ‘Dynamite’, this time in a duet with her sister! You can hear it from outside! Gawd, no telling how these two are going to be remembered.
With a few hours left, the contestants are putting the finishing touches to their house with Jenna & Josh facing the problem of paint on the carpet!
Josh grabs the cleaner and his talking to Tania in the process really annoys the whiny Jenna who continues to hound him throughout the last few hours.
We get a montage of the contestants putting together their last few elements and with Jenna’s annoying voice, I’m so glad when Scott tells them all ‘tools down’! Jenna doesn’t even want to high five Josh after a huge job!
They all gather in front of Scott where they all get a glimpse of the completely wrecked Jenna & Josh who just seem to float there as Scott tells them what is on the line for the winners of this week’s judging.
The contestants head off to the workshop as Judges John and Neil rock up and begin inspection at Josh & Jenna’s house. We look at their week which has been very turbulent but looking at the before and after pictures, it looks fantastic.
The judges think it is a ‘current’ look and think it has a sense of humour. They think they have chosen well and love the colours, saying they work together. They also compliment the roof to floor wardrobe. They love the space of the bedroom/ office.
They don’t like the paint job around the windows and they don’t really like the idea of the bed 100%
Next up is house two belonging to Polly & Waz who seem to have had a better week this week with a few things working well.
The judges love the look of the room (and looking at before and afters, it does look magnificent) immediately saying it is better than last weeks. They love the colours, the curtain and music theme however they don’t like the stencil of the microphone or the wardrobe.
They also like how some stuff looks new and the indents in the room. They give the design a seven and think it is the best if not better than what they have seen so far.
After the break, we get a bit of a recap of events thus far before the judges begin on judging of house 3 belonging to the sisters, Katrina & Amie.
They have had a tough week this week, trying to find a lot of stuff that will bring the secondhand look and modern feel together. They are the only people not to create a bedroom this week, opting to turn the room into an office space.
The judges wished it would be easier for buyers to convert it back into a bedroom. They don’t like the room, saying the elements of the room do not gel together, saying there is too much space. They do not like the execution at all.
There are a few good parts, but overall, they do not like the room very much at all.
Last up are Rod and Tania who built half the room themselves as a cost cutting measure. Looking at the preview, this room looks a little bland for my liking but the judges think it is a good effort. They like the fact they have turned the small room into a kids paradise. They love how they’ve not gone to create a study and while they love the desk and wardrobe unit, the execution of the painting at the back isn’t too well recognised. They also don’t like the carpet that much however it will be okay if they don’t follow it through the house.
They don’t say anything about the wax on the surfboard, so I guess not heeding Shelley’s advice hasn’t hurt the team too much.
With judging over, the judges deliberate with Scott outside saying they have made up their minds and are overall happy that the contestants have stepped up their game and have taken their advice to create better rooms overall.
After the break, we head to Scott’s warehouse for the results which last week were accused of being too long (although I didn’t really feel this was the case).
Scott turns to show them the dreaded blackboard, telling the contestants the judges have picked a winner (of course). He tells them that the judges were overall impressed with the designs. Katrina & Amie need the money, but by the sounds of it, they won’t be getting it this week!
Scott tells the teams how the judging works before moving to Rod & Tania, reading out the comments from the judges regarding design which he will be marking first. They score a 6 out of 10, a lot more than last week!
Onto Katrina & Amie and the sisters are unimpressed with their score of 5. The contestants realise the judges are being tough this week!
Moving onto Polly & Waz who are now hopeful that the judges love their effort. They are relieved to see they do have quite a few good reviews, scoring a seven overall, the best score for design so far and a bit jump on last week.
To Josh & Jenna and after reading out the judges comments, Scott gives them an equal seven out of ten with design.
Moving onto execution and Scott turns the board and unlike last week, we are rushed through this part of the verdict. Thank god, I guess if we aren’t seeing what he is writing, why spend too much time on it.
After quickly adding up the scores, he turns the board… as we go to a break. Well, who didn’t see that coming. And what do you know, the rumours are true as The Block asks for 2012 competitors!
When we return, we finally see the results after a quick recap of what we have just seen (so, pointless recap really).
Overall, for execution, Josh & Jenna score a seven, Polly & Waz a six, Katrina & Amie a 10 and Rod & Tania a 7. This means the teams sit at:
JOSH & JENNA: 14
POLLY & WAZ and TANIA & ROD: 13
KATRINA & AMIE: 10
Making Josh and Jenna the winners of today’s challenge. For such a huge effort, they are surely stoked.
With that, the episode is over and like the contestants themselves, the show has managed to improve on last week. The verdict segment of the show was cut down and the judging of the room seemed to run a lot smoother this week with a more in depth analysis.
Other than Jenna’s whining at the end (and granted, she probably deserved to give a bit, it was an awesome episode and I cannot wait for the contestants to begin work on room number three.
Courtney’s Verdict: 9.8/10
