Having grown dissatisfied with his work, world-famous Australian painter Brad Morahan (James Mason) settles on an island in the Great Barrier Reef inhabited by the witch-like Ma Ryan (Neva Carr-Glyn) and her granddaughter Cora (Helen Mirren). A child of nature who prefers to swim in the nude, Cora steals whatever she can in order to support herself and her gin-soaked grandmother. And when the young woman poses for Morahan, not even the theft of $300 by drifter Nat Kelly (Jack MacGowran) can diminish Brad’s renewed passion and excitement for his work.

Following a fight with Cora and a quarrel with Brad, Ma Ryan accidentally falls from a cliff and dies, leaving both painter and model fearing they will be accused of murder. Yet, once the police determine that the fall was an accident, Brad’s renewed interest in life and in art help him see that he’s in love with Cora just as much as she is with him.
