Australia has crowned a new queen of the hardcourts after Samantha Stosur became the first Aussie woman to win a Grand Slam title in 31 years with a stunning straight sets victory over Serena Williams in the US Open Final yesterday morning (AEST).
The Flushing Meadows crowd was silenced by the 27-year-old Australian as she powered to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the local favourite and three-time US Open champion on an emotional day for the host city as it remembered 9/11.
An exhilarating fortnight of US Open tennis action came to a close this morning (AEST) when World No 1 Novak Djokovic claimed his third major of the year with a breathtaking four-set victory over Rafael Nadal.
