ABC Digital TV Channel line up: Is channel 20 returning?

A few days ago, my TIVO announced it had added a new channel to the line up – channel 20.

As digital channel 20 was what used to be ABC1′s HD simulcast prior to the launch of ABC News 24 in July last year, I was naturally curious. Digital channel 20 disappeared off ABC’s digital channel line up when 24 started.

As it turns out, digital channel 20 is nothing more than a clone of digital channel 24. Both are in HD (720p).

But the move does beg the question – are we set to see changes to ABC’s digital channel line up? And, what is the reason for channel 20 being back?

At this stage there is no information around.

Note – this observation based on receving ABC on NSW Central Coast.

TiVo glitch I suspect. ABC don’t have enough bandwidth for 2 HD channels, 3 SD channels and two audio channels.

With digital channels, you can have many channel numbers for the same piece of bandwidth.

ONE is on digital channels 1 and 12. Same single HD channel, not 2 HD channels.

Seven is on digital channels 7, 70 and 71. Again same single SD channel, not 3 separate channels.

    ABC1 is 2 and 21.

And now – at least where I am – ABC News 24 is on 20 and 24.

Not 2 HD channels, just 2 channel numbers pointing to the same single HD stream.
