Beauty & The Geek Australia Season Three – Episode #7

The makeovers are done (for now…), the hunk has been eliminated and love has been found in the most unlikely places. There isn’t anything else this show can throw at the contestants, right? Wrong! Has anyone heard of ‘The Spelling Bee’? A common occurrence, this pest can bring down even the brainiest of beauties with the rare side-symptom of some electric shocks…to be administered on the geeks! Ooooooh. Should be a fun one!

The contestants begin the episode with a daytime spa session. The girls try to work on Julian’s body language when dealing with women. Some of the advice is quite funny and I love Julian’s attentiveness. The girls then give Julian a bit of a smooch.

The contestants then head to the living room where Bernard visits them and tells them that the end is in sight! He tells us that this week will have a joint challenge. The beauties will have their knowledge of the English language tested which they are all terrified about, with results that may ‘shock’ the geeks. Lachlan says he is shocked by some of the stuff Sarah says and as we see with her attempt to spell ‘Barack’ as in ‘Barack’ Obama (B E R A A K C C A).

The second challenge will see the geeks get revved up for the ride of their life in a challenge which will see them swap lab coats for leather. With that, Bernard leaves them to study.

Jimmy tries to quiz Mackenzie on her language skills and the geeks are quite shocked at how little they know.

The contestant’s then head outside where all of the geeks are standing on podiums hooked up with electrodes coming off of them everywhere. Bernard welcomes them to the Electric Spelling Bee.

The rules are simple; the beauties will have to spell a word and if they get it wrong, the geek they are paired with will be shocked. Bernard tests the equipment out. Bernard tells them that if they misspell a world twice, they will be out of the challenge. But, if their geek can’t stand the pain any longer, they will also be out.

The words will be pulled out of their geek’s profession. Jordan (and Julian) are first with the word ‘Cholesterol’. She says; ‘C…A (X)’ and that didn’t last long with Julian getting shocked. She has another try ‘C…E (X)’ and with that, she and Julian are out.

Dolly is next and her first word is ‘Renaissance’ and she says; R…E…N…A…S (X)’ and Bendeguz gets a shock. Dolly has another go. She says ‘R…E…N…A…C (X)’ and Bendeguz gets shocked. Dolly and Bendeguz are out.

Mackenzie is next with ‘Technology’ and she says ‘T…E…C…H…N…and after the break…O…L…O…G…Y! And she and Jimmy are still in it.

Jacelle has Rhythm and she says ‘R…H…Y…T…H…UM (X)’ and Gilbert gets shocked but you can’t see it. Jacelle has another try and she says; ‘R…H…Y…T…H…Y (X)’ which means she and Gilbert are out. (apparently, jumping from an H to an M is not English; it’s silly)

To Sarah and Lachlan and Sarah gets Parliament and she says; ‘P…A…R…L…I…A…M…E…N…T’, getting it right.

Mackenzie comes up for her second attempt and her word is Gigabyte. She says ‘G…I…G…A…B…Y…T…E’ which is surprisingly correct for someone like Mackenzie. Sarah is back up with the word Feudalism. She says ‘F…U (X)’ giving Lachlan a zap. (Sarah: Why is Lachlan a politics geek? why can’t he be a makeup geek?’) Round two and she says ‘F…E…W (X)’ leaving Jimmy and Mackenzie winners and immunity (meaning they won’t be in the bottom two yet again).

With that, sun sets on this challenge. At night, Lachlan and Jordan have some alone time by gathering some of Jordan’s favourite food together (McDonald’s obviously) for a special date. He also has some flowers. I’m fairly sure these guys are not allowed off campus so this is completely staged nonetheless. Jordan is speechless.

The next day, the contestants arrive at a motor track with the beauties looking like grid girls and the boys looking like racers. Bernard welcomes them to the challenge where he tells them that the beauties will be building a bike and a sidecar for the geek and beauty to race around a race track. Mackenzie has only ever made an IKEA cupboard.

They are given items but no instructions, so they better learn! Sarah did ask Lachlan how to use a spatula (meaning Spanner) but that won’t be helpful.

With that, they begin! Jordan gets the first bike but Jacelle chooses a red bike as they go fastest apparently. They are all working hard but the geeks are not allowed to help; creating frustration. A bit of a plot hole here; in a cutaway when Jacelle was describing how she had screwed the screws in backwards, the banner had the word ‘Jordan’ on it. I just thought it was necessary to point that out.

The real Jordan finishes first with Mackenzie finishing second. Jacelle is fourth after Dolly with Sarah trying to finish fifth. The girls give Sarah a hand and finally, they can race. Bernard tells them that the girls will not be riding with the geeks. With that, Bernard introduces the Hogs Motorcycle gang! Yep, a pack of bikies come riding out from no where.

After the break, the bikers line up with Bernard in front of the contestants. Bernard says that as Jordan completed the bike first, Julian gets an advantage in the race. Bernard points out the shapes and sizes of the Hog members and tells Julian that he will be getting the lightest member, Mick.

Basically, the contestants who scored lower got a heavier member. Lachlan’s ‘teammate’ is named Roundy.

The geeks will have to make a pitstop with the beauties asked to change a side tyre. Only then can the geek and his passenger continue on with the race. With that, it is off to the pitstop for the race.

With that, it seems as if Lachlan and Bendeguz are in front. Soon enough, Bendeguz moves in front. Gilbert is in third but in a good pace while he is soon able to pass Lachlan. Jimmy is taking up the rear.

Bendeguz is still in front but soon, the weight of the biker makes Bendeguz crash on a turn with Julian crashing into Bendeguz. With that, they pick up the pieces and continue the race running.

Lachlan and Gilbert are still competing and soon, they reach the pit stop.

Jordan helps Sarah with the pit stop as she knows she is not good mechanically. Jacelle is able to do it without worry. Gilbert is actually off first I think. With that, he crosses the finish line with no competition and he and Jacelle win immunity and the power to nominate yet again.

With that, the contestants gather around Bernard as he debriefs on the challenge and gives Gilbert and Jacelle the trophy.

But, there may not be any nominations this week. Bernard offers a geek immunity if they get a tattoo.

Julian won’t do it but Bernard then says it will be a tattoo of their beauty’s name. With that, some girl named Jem comes round as the tattoo artist. And with that, Lachlan steps forward to take the challenge.

Jordan is not happy, knowing it will be a tattoo of the name Sarah. Sarah doesn’t seem very happy about this either. Dolly & Bendeguz and Jordan & Julian will face elimination tonight. Jordan continues to complain about it as Jordan gets the tattoo on the bum.

In the house, Jordan is in the bedroom stressing about the situation. The girls come in to offer her support but won’t let Lachlan make her cry. I don’t really know why she is making a big deal about this. I wouldn’t care if my partner did it for these reasons. Still, I would be pissed off if that particular action sent me into elimination; which it has done to Jordan.

Lachlan meanwhile is feeling proud that he has stepped forward to do something he didn’t think he’d do. He hopes their reactions are positive. Yeah right.

Back at the mansion, Lachlan comes back and reveals that he did get it. Sarah breaks down into tears and hugs Lachlan who still has his pants down. She says she cried because of the shock and the fact he has her name tattooed on his arse.

He then goes up to confront Jordan who doesn’t look happy at all. After the break, she reveals that she didn’t want to speak to him. She tells him she has no respect with what he did and that he didn’t use his head. He feels he did use his head but Jordan says she feels sick to know that he has Sarah’s name on his arse.

Jordan tells him that he thought he was different from the other guys but says he isn’t and much worse. Maybe the makeover changed him! Lachlan says he doesn’t have the skills to deal with this and he feels this may be his first break up.

Jordan doesn’t know if her relationship was love, but it was something. Oh god.

With that, the contestants up for elimination are getting ready but Gilbert is adamant that Dolly is staying.

Julian asks Jordan for study tips as Julian tries to get Jordan back on track after a huge day.

With that, they head into elimination where Bernard is waiting.

He runs through the rules again, which stay the same as previous weeks. Beauties will be answering their questions first. Their subject is English. Jordan is first and gets two pictures; one of lips and one of a stick. She has to just pair the two together to create the word ‘lipstick’ and she does; meaning she wins. Wow, so hard.

Dolly gets the word ‘Palindrome’ and has to tell Bernard what it means. What? This is too unfair, even if it is luck of the draw.

She can say the word Palindrome, which as Bendeguz says, is a good start.

She thinks it is a type of poem but it is actually something that reads the same backwards as it does forwards.
Jordan has the question ‘Something that is simple is also said to be as easy as what popular pastry?’ She correctly guesses Pie.

Dolly has the question; ‘in the game Scrabble, how many points is the letter J worth’ but she says it is 2, when it is 8.

It is time for the swap and the geeks enter the room for their turn. No pressure, Bendeguz.

Their subject is Tough Guys. Bendeguz is first and his question is… ‘which bodybuilding competition did old Arnie win 7 times?’ and he guesses Mr. Universe which is incorrect. The correct answer is Mr. Olympia. With that, Julian and Jordan stay on as Bendeguz and Dolly are eliminated. Gilbert will be split from his gal!

So, like always, this quirky show has mastered the art of being funny and taught itself to give some much needed end of the week entertainment. Some scenes did seem scripted and the McDonald’s food used in Jordan and Lachlan’s dinner date was pure product placement and a sneaky example at that.

The questions were again unfair and it almost seemed as if the producers tried to get Jordan to stay, possibly in light of the unfolding ‘controversial’ break up. And we all know Seven loves to spruik a good (or bad) controversy.

Other than that, it was an enjoyable episode and look forward to another one next week!
