Cricket Superstar has taken over from Football Superstar and is the same show basically – but with cricket being the focus this time. The main judge on this series is cricket legend Allan Border – Australia’s captain from 1984 – 1994. Cricket legends past and present will also mentor the boys, such as Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden.
Hosted by Lee Furlong as was the former Football series, they travel from coast to coast to find Australia’s first cricket superstar contestants. The winner will receieve a scholarship to Cricket Australia’s “Centre of Excellence” (Where Shane Warne, Shane Watson and Glenn McGrath attended) and a rookie contract to their home state team.
In the trials the boys are tested on accuracy, catching and agility. Then they go through their favourite disciplines whether fast or spin bowling or batting. The top from each state then head to Brisbane to be whittled down from the top 60 down to 15.
DO NOT READ ON – SPOILER ALERT!
The top 15 boys are:
Justin Avendano (18) NSW – A NSW under 19 batter.
Sam Brandon (20) QLD – Fastest bowler at trials – all over 130km per hour.
Chris Chellew (21) WA – Bowler and great fielder known as the “Mini Marvel”
Josh Clarke (18) NSW – A fitness freak, a spin bowler and all rounder. Winner of major trial challenge.
Ben Cooper (19) TAS – Batter whose brother is Tom Cooper who plays for the South Australian Red Backs.
Mason Crozier (20) VIC – Known as a pretty boy and with the nickname “Zoolander”, he is a great pace bowler.
Jake Fawcett (21) WA – Wicketkeeper
Alex Frick (19) VIC – VERY tall fast bowler that hates TV cameras
Ian Holland (21) VIC – Known as “Dutchie” he bat’s six 6′s in a row in trials – also looks like the ladies man of the season.
James Moss (22) SA – Lost his AFL rookie contract with the Adelaide Crows’s, so is now looking to cricket. A great batter and all rounder.
Richard Potter (18) NSW – Wicketkeeper.
Jake Scicluna (17) NSW – Batter who is best friends and neighbour to fellow contestant Sean
Jackson Smith (19) QLD – Bowler.
David Vernon (21) WA – Left arm paced bowler and decent with a bat!
Cameron Williams (20) TAS – A leg spinner.
Over all if you like cricket – you will like it. If you liked Football superstar you will also like it! But I must say Allan Border is very good and as we are a nation of cricket lovers more than football/soccer fans, it is a safe bet by Foxtel. I enjoyed and will post the results each week – it is definately not “MUST WATCH ” TV, but with what else is on, maybe! Save yourself for the next show – GRIMM – which is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
Only one will become Australia’s first cricket superstar – will you be watching?
Cricket Superstar airs at 7.30pm on FOX 8 AEDT on Wednesdays.
