Recap: Excess Baggage Season One – Check In #2

Sorry guys, just couldn’t resist!

Previous Episode: Excess Baggage Season One – Endurance Challenge #2

The contestants have sailed, swam and scuba dived- but how much has this vigorous exercise, combined with all that good nutritional information they are spewing out to the contestants, helped in their quest of losing body fat and reducing weight circumference? The show’s first competitive check in occurs in this very sudden final episode to air on Nine!

It’s the last day to be set in the Whitsundays and the contestants are about to undertake their second fitness test. They turn up to a jetty where Christian recaps the scoreboard positions. He tells the laggers that they aren’t far behind and that the fitness test today will affect their overall score.

Darryn and Lisa go through the push up test to see if they could break their records from last week. The pull up test is next and Gabby, who got nothing last week, is trying to pull one out. She doesn’t get any this time either, but she does get closer.

40m sprint is next and Kevin is steaming through this one! Dipper is next and he does his ankle quite badly. No, it’s his calf, and he goes down. He tries to calm himself down but he’s out of contention. Christian does tell him he will recover quite easily.

This fitness test has taken its toll on a few people, and Gabby is worried that the 1.6km run will injure others. She and Christian get into a fight about it. Christian wants her to worry about herself, but Gabby can’t stand to see someone else get hurt. Darryn for one wants her to shut her trap!

Christian tries to explain to Gabby why Dipper was vulnerable to injury, but Gabby is convinced he is driving them all to injury.

Gabby thinks he is trying to prove her wrong by countering her argument. Christian tells her bluntly that none of them would get injured had they looked after their bodies.

They end up walking away from each other.

Opinion point: Are Gabby’s concerns valid?

After the break, the 1.6km run is still on and will be held on an eight lap beach course. Won’t the different terrain affect the contestant’s mobility?

Gabby is not coping at all, crying and sobbing. Christian runs with her, relentless in his approach to the rebellious contestant. Gabby finishes strong, first in the females I think. She collapses under a tree and breathes heavily.

Lisa is last running, and Darryn is very much yelling at her, telling her to sprint. Christian helps her finish the race and she has really no words for Darryn.

At the end of the race, Christian congratulates them and gives Gabby a very ironic hug. Gabby apologises for her behaviour, blaming it on the fact her dad left her when she was 5. Because of this, she fears that people will always leave her.

Opinion point: As the week wraps up in the Whitsundays, has this show done enough to showcase the lovely scenery?

After the break, Kate is standing outside a hangar. Here, the check in will occur. The winner will have money donated to their charity. We find out that all the new measurements have been taken and are ready to be revealed.

The contestants rock up. Kate randomly tells us that in four weeks, the first elimination will occur. Hey, guess what? She’s on ground to meet them all! FINALLY! Too little too late, however.

Christian goes through the slightly altered rules for the competitive check in. Their performance will determine a score for them which will be added to their overall score.

It’s time for the check in results. Christian and Nathan are up first. They could have gotten Kate to host this, but instead, they get THE CONTESTANT’S TEAM MATE to host!! WHAT! Oh, crap!

Nathan reads out Christine’s results.

Last week, Christine’s Body Fat Percentage was 39.2%. It is now…37.5%. That’s a change of -1.7%. That means, Christine has earned 1.7 points.

Last week, her Waist Measurement was 108.5cm. This week, it is…107.5cm, a change of -0.9%, earning 0.9 points. Christine hoped it would be more.

Last check in, her fitness score was 3.2. It is now…5.2! This gives her an OVERALL score of 7.8! Nathan is next.

Nathan’s BFP was 41.6%. It is now…39.3%! His WC was 132.5cm. It is now…127cm! His FTS was 2.2. It is now…3.3, giving him an overall score of 9.8!

Combined, the yellow team’s score, including all the points they collected over the week, is 27.6.

Purple team heads up next and Matt reads out Ajay’s score. Her BFP was 44.8%. It is now…44.7%! Hmm, not so good. Christian tells her that her body works differently. Ajay cries as she is determined to heal her life. She does manage to decrease her WC by 8.7%, 9 and a half centimetres. Her FTS is now 4.6. Don’t know what it was last week, they didn’t show it!

Her check in score is 13.4! Now, it’s Matt’s turn.

He has lost 1.4% of his body fat. His WC was 139cm. It is now…132.5cm! Brilliant! His fitness score was 3.1. It is now…4.1! His check in score is 10.2. As a team, they score 27.6- tied with first place.

Opinion point: What do you think of the competitive check in?

After the break, it is the Orange team’s turn. We are shown how Dipper’s waist circumference is 126cm. We are given a flashback to that revelation a week ago. Don’t really know why.

His BFP was 33.3%. It is now…30.8%! His WC was 126cm. It is now…122cm! Dipper just wants his next stat, but Lana tells him to savour each of these moments. His FTS was 5.9. Today, it is…5.4. This is despite his bad leg. His overall score is 11.1.

Lana is next. She achieves a 1.4% decrease in BFP. Her WC was 123.5cm. It is now…118.5cm! Her fitness score was 3.7 and it is now 3.9. Her overall score was 9.3! Their combined score gives them 26.4, in last place.

To the pink team and Kate achieves a 1.9% BFP decrease. Her WC was 110cm. It is now…102.5cm. Her fitness score has gone down from 5.1 to 4.9. This gives her a score of 13.6- quite a huge effort!

Sarah is next. Her BFP was 48.6%. It is now…44.8%- bloody huge! She also goes down 4.5% from her last WCM. She has also gone up from 3.2 to 3.7 in terms of FTS. Her score is therefore 12- giving their team a combined score of 28.6, putting them in first place.

Next are Darryn and Lisa- an unknown quantity. We recap their rocky ride in this competition. Darryn is first.

His BFP was 33.5%. Now, it is…32.1%. His WC was 106cm. It is now…100cm, a change of 5.7%. He’s still not happy though. His FTS was 6.4. His FTS is now 6.9! That gives him a score of 14! He’s gotta be happy about that. Christian tells him to stop putting pressure on himself- it may stop him from putting pressure on Lisa.

Lisa is next. Her BFP was 50.6%. It is now…to be revealed soon.

Opinion point: If Darryn puts less pressure on himself, will he in turn stop putting pressure on Lisa?

After the break, it is revealed to be…50.3%. A dismal effort. She doesn’t take this news well but Joanna says she had a huge weight reduction, but because of all that fat, she will only drop a bit at a time.

Her WC was 136.5cm. It is now…133.5cm. Her FTS was 3.4. It is now…4.1- awesome. It gives her a score of only 6.6. Just silence. How does her score get so low? Darryn thinks she needs to work harder. Lisa says as she hasn’t worked out in so long, she is just doing what her body can cope with right now. Darryn wonders how she can know what it can cope with as it is all in her head.

He still thinks Lisa could have done better. They get 21.6, putting them in, oh, last place!

Kate comes in for some pretty useless stats, before it is onwards with the green team. Gabby achieves a 1.2% BF loss. She thinks she would have lost more due to her fight with Christian. Her waist has decreased by 5.8%. Her fitness score has risen to 4.8. This gives her a score of 11.8.

Ben is next. His body fat goes down by 2.2%. His WC has gone down by 2.8%. His FTS was 4.2. This disappointed him- and we are recapped on this. It is now…4.2- the same. This gives him a score of 9.2. Their overall score is 29- putting them in first place, mostly due to their challenge winning.

Blues are next. Renae’s BFP was 46.7%. It is now…45.3%. She gets a 2.2% reduction in her waist. Her FTS was 2.8. It is now 4.1! Her check in score is 8.2!

After being reminded about Kevin’s health scare, Joanna wonders what he is worried about. He says everything, haha.

His BFP was 38.8%. It is now…34.1%. His WC was 118cm. It is now…111.5cm! His FTS was 4.8. It is now…5.2! His score is 15.4- huge!

Kevin owes a lot of this to Renae. They are now at 30.6- straight to the top.

One team remains- Brant and John.

We are reminded of their time this week before we get into it. They seem confident. John has lost 3.2% body fat. His WC has dropped by 2% however his FTS has decreased to 0.8. He blames this on his leg, but he still tears up, especially when Christian questions him on his goals. His check in score is 6.

Brant needs 16.7 points to come in first. His BFP was 26.9%. It is now 28.7%- a change of +1.8. I’m surprised he is laughing. That’s terrible. His WC was 108.5cm- and it remains the same this week. By not increasing, they high five. The judges are not happy, with Joanna noting the lack of change and Tim noting their pisstake of a serious situation.

His FTS was 4.7. That is now 6.2. His score is 6.2. He feels terrible about himself. Their overall score is 20.2, putting them in last place. This means the winners this week are Kevin and Renae!

Kevin wins $10,000 for his charity- Variety Australia!

Their scores are now all added up to their Kimberley scores. They look like this:

KATE & SARAH: 34.6

GABBY & BEN: 31

KEVIN & RENAE: 30.6

AJAY & MATT: 29.6

CHRISTINE & NATHAN: 29.6

DIPPER & LANA: 28.4

BRANT & JOHN: 28.2

DARRYN & LISA: Was not shown (on second look, the scores they showed were unchanged from this week)

With that, their week is over. Kate comes in to deliver good news- to tell them where they are going next. It will be a cool place- Tasmania! Brant is worried that they may try to buy off some of his island!

The episode ends- and it was a step up from yesterday. Kate’s absence is just so obscenely noticeable, despite her increased presence tonight. The check in could have been done better as well. With so many numbers and calculations- it can easily confuse the viewer. By constantly changing how some stats were presented, this cause further confusion.

Still, production was stunning, the pace was great and for the final episode on Nine, I just hope the show has done enough to attract viewers to GO!

Excess Baggage next airs Feb 13 at 6.30PM on GO!

REMINDER: There is NO episode tomorrow. This episode has been pulled.

Production Values (visual and audio techniques, overall ‘bling’ of the show):4.2 /5

‘Sell-out’ factor (Cross-promotion and product placement free?): 2/2

Entertainment Value (emotional feel, storyline, eventful?): 2.1/3

Courtney’s Verdict: 8.3/10
