My Kitchen Rules. Season Three - Episode Twenty Two: Food Stall Challenge

Sam & Jillian have left, and we’re back on for round three of eliminations. Tonight is a food stall challenge on the streets of Melbourne. Can the ten remaining teams keep up with the lunch time rush? Who will crack under the pressure?

The contestants head into a kitchen where the judges are waiting for them. Pete says that Melbournians are all foodies, which scare the New South Welshmen in the team. Manu tells them that they will all be cooking in the industrial kitchen they are standing in, before selling their food on the streets through spruiking.

The team who makes the most money will be the people’s choice however if the judges deem your food as the worst, they will be sent into elimination.

Their time to cook begins, and they have an hour and a half.

Mezze Platter with Lamb Souvlaki is on Steve and Helen’s menu today and it sounds great. A lovely, quick, Greek fix for lunch is always great. Helen points out the population of Greeks who live in Melbourne.

Andy and Megan are cooking San Choy Bow with Prawn Skewers. They don’t know how popular it is but Andy’s mother swears by it.

Carla & Thomas will be cooking Beef and Bean Tacos with guacamole and salsa. Carla thinks they have it down pat.

Peter & Gary are doing Deep Fried Chicken Strips with some veggie skewers. They just want to be safe with the two very fearful of losing.

Leigh & Jennifer are doing Pork Tortillas, using a pressure cooker for the first time. This could be an interesting experiment. I wish Emma & Andrew were here to see this.

Simon & Meg are doing well, so Steve decides to reenact that Maori dance that greeted the contestants who arrived to eat in Simon & Meg’s NZ restaurant kitchen.

Profiteroles are on the menu for Nic & Rocco and their main goal is to pick up their game after a disastrous second round.

Carly & Emily are doing a Thai Green Chicken Curry with some rice. They know that Melbournians are keen to spend, so they aim to sell at a high price.

Steve & Helen are preparing the tzaziki and Souvlaki and they are having a lot of fun, unlike Nic and Rocco, who are both rushing through their dish, both blending up one dish!

An hour and four minutes remain and Carly & Emily realise that they don’t have enough cutlery to cook the amount of rice they want, so they decide to bake some!

Peter & Gary can hear the commotion on Carly & Emily’s bench, and they both want to beat the two girls whom they agree can’t cook well.

All Thomas has done is dice tomatoes, so he wants to begin in the mince. He grabs for a lighter, but can’t seem to get it going. He is swearing and frustrated. He asks Carly & Emily to help him take off the child lock, but they’re too busy.

He’s beginning to lose it!

After the break, Manu & Pete recap what’s happened so far before reminding viewers what is up for stake tonight. Steve & Helen are aiming for one hundred servings.

Thomas is still trying to work the lighter and is swearing his head off. He gets the mince on the stove top. Bad luck for the team who though tacos would be easy! They decide to reduce the quantity of mince in each pot and he hurriedly, to Carla’s Chagrin, separates the mince into several pots.

Angela & Justine are doing some sort of Chocolate Chili Con Carne. Sounds…odd.

Angela thinks that the subtle hint of chocolate will add to the depth of flavour, but they are already struggling.

Nic & Rocco joke about the amount of people doing Mexican today. Leigh & Jennifer need someone to help them drain a pot, and Rocco is quick on the scene. As he helps the thankful ladies, Rocky music plays in the background.

Safe to say, Leigh and Jennifer take great pleasure in seeing him help them. He ends his helping stint with a very stereotypical ‘mamma mia’!

Simon and Meg were able to sit out of the last challenge after winning the Snowy Mountain challenge’s people’s choice. They just hope they aren’t rusty.

They’re cooking Beef Noodles with Coriander Pesto. They chose this because it is easy to eat on the run.

Fifty minutes remain and Peter & Gary’s chicken component is going well, so Gary begins to work on the vegetable skewers.

Andy and Megan are stressing as Andy begins to skewer the meat. Megan suggests throwing the meat straight onto the grill, but Andy doesn’t think that is a good idea at all.

Leigh & Jennifer are working on trying to get their pork perfect. They test their pressure cooker, knowing that they have no plan if the cooker doesn’t work.

The mince in Thomas & Carla’s dish begins to brown and he adds the tomato. Manu comes over to see what they’re doing and he thinks they are a little crazy. He isn’t happy with the mess in the kitchen. He tells them that if they work messily, they will ultimately lose time cleaning up.

David & Scott are working on Mediterranean Club Sandwiches, thinking it will be a new experience for Melbournians.

Peter has a good method going in marinating and crumbing his chicken, however with Steve yelling out Souvlaki and other contestants yelling out, he loses attention at times, and begins to make mistakes.

Carly & Emily have put one pot of their mince they have on, and with not much time left, they are in trouble.

Leigh and Jennifer now have to remove their pork from the pressure cooker and we wait with bated breath to see how this has turned out.

30 minutes remain and the pressure is on. Luckily for Jennifer, their pork is cooked perfectly.

Carla has so much stuff to do, and Thomas’ mince mix is not reducing. Thomas tries to reduce the mix faster by putting a lid on the pots to keep in the heat. Manu tells him quickly that by putting a lid on it, the vapors will remain in the pot, and the mix won’t reduce.

Dumb! Use your head. Haha.

Simon & Meg start on their pesto and it doesn’t take them too long to blend it, however one bump, and Meg drops a handful of pepper corns into the pesto. She has to begin again.

Leigh and Nic are joking about each other’s dishes which are coming along while Peter & Gary and Carly & Emily are both trying to avoid the idea of each other winning people’s choice.

David & Scott don’t think they can cook heaps of sandwiches at once, so they decide to make fewer sandwiches at higher quality so they can up the price of them.

Simon begins on his vegetables, but they really should be cooking their noodles.

Fifteen minutes remain. Carly & Emily finish their curry, but they need to check their ‘baking’ rice. It turns out perfectly.

Peter & Gary are strapped for time and decide that there are too many veggie skewers to cook and decide to also chop down on their portion sizes.

Megan and Andy are also working with skewers and are panicking over the lack of time left.

Five minutes to go and they all begin packing. It’s high intensity work, and with a minute to go, they all wonder whether they are forgetting something.

It all seems to be going well. Soon enough, time is up.

They are all exhausted, but it is time to hit the streets and begin to sell.

Outside, they realise that they will be selling out of ‘Pop up’ food stalls ‘on wheels’!

They have to cycle their way to their destination. The bikes do look ridiculous. This is where NOT being a Victorian team would come in handy.

Jennifer doesn’t drive or ride bikes, and she is constantly heard yelling at Melbournians to get out of her way.

When they reach their destination, they have an hour to sell.

Nic and Rocco decide to set up next to Peter & Gary. As they finish their stand, Peter & Gary continue to struggle with their marquee.

David & Scott are setting up next door to Megan & Andy. Andy is nervous about serving on the street, especially to richer people.

It isn’t long before hungry Melbournians begin to turn up to sample the food. Many contestants start off at $5- $10 apiece.

Angela & Justine set up next to Carla & Thomas. The latter thinks this is a stupid idea, as they are from Victoria. Carly & Emily are also taking advantage of their home-state status.

The judges try Carly & Emily’s curry and they seem impressed, but think it could be hotter. One customer thinks it is the best she’s ever had.

All these school kids come to try Nic & Rocco’s profiteroles, which gives them a good boost. The judges are very impressed but Pete doesn’t think people will buy the dessert.

Steve puts his spruiking skills to the test and all of a sudden, people turn up! He’s really good at it.

Manu loves the marinade and the flavour of the lamb. The customers are absolutely dumbstruck by the quality of the lamb.

Peter & Gary are going nowhere. Disney-style music plays as they fail…miserably.

The judges seem to love the chicken and mayo, but Manu doesn’t know what they were thinking when they did the veggie skewer. One customer loves the dish!

Thomas & Carla form a queue but the judges don’t give too much away with this dish. Carla claims the tacos are the best ever, even better than those found in Mexico. A bit awkward when a person who’s been to Mexico rocks up!

Angela & Justine’s dish is praised by the judges due to the low cost, large serving and beautiful presentation. The customers are easily impressed with it and the judges think it is better than Thomas & Carla’s.

David & Scott’s club sandwich goes down a treat with the judges and the customers love the low price.

Megan & Andy’s dish is judged and Pete doesn’t know how to eat it however Manu loves the prawns.

Leigh & Jennifer drag customers in, but their prices put a few people off. Leigh asks for a tip from one customer who smartly replies with ‘what, about what you could do better?’

One customer comes back to give them coffee’s, which is nice of him.

Simon & Meg are selling their ‘pesto’, or as Australian’s take it, ‘Piss-tow’. Not good.

The time is ticking and spruiking gets louder and louder.

Thomas & Carla sell out, but they hope they did OK.

After the break, it is results time.

The judges go around to each team for their points. Megan & Andy are first and Pete loved their seafood.

Steve & Helen are next and Manu loved the lamb’s flavour. He thinks it represented them. Pete loved the haloumi and tzaziki. They’re sure they’re safe.

Peter & Gary are next and Manu is struggling to make sense out of it. He loved the chicken crumb, but that was it. The veggie skewer was basically, horrible.

Angela & Justine are up next and Manu questions their chocolate and beef fusion. They think it would be different but didn’t sell much of it. Manu loved it, and the girls are over the moon.

Leigh & Jennifer are next and Manu thought the dish was hard to eat and was messy, but that’s where the negatives stop, and Pete loved the flavours.

David & Scott are next and Manu thought the sandwich was nice but told them that they could have sold it better.

Simon & Meg were next and Pete thought the pesto was missing something but Manu liked the beef. He too didn’t like the pesto.

Thomas & Carla are next and Pete thought their selling skills were great. He loved the quantity of ingredients, but it came down to the meat filling. Manu doesn’t think it was good at all. They should hope they have made the most money.

Carly & Emily are next and Pete would have loved more heat and so did Manu.

Last are Nic & Rocco. Pete mentions that the dish was a dessert and not lunch, but Manu loved it and Pete loved how they went to the length to offer two profiteroles.

So, who is the people’s choice? There is a $20 difference between first and second place. The two top scoring teams were…Steve & Helen…and…Carly & Emily.

The winners are…with $348…Steve & Helen! To Peter & Gary’s delight…

Now for the bad news. Manu thinks the dishes weren’t bad today, so the loser was decided based on detail.

The contestants heading into sudden death are…Peter & Gary.

The real question is, who will they face? Tomorrow, they are back in Kitchen HQ for another double-challenge. Peter & Gary’s threat – whoever they face, they will send home!

Thankyou so much to Courtney for writing tonights recap!
