The Asian whizzez Carly and Emily tonight take on the Italian boys in tonight’s decider. Will they stick to what they know best or go out on a limb?
Manu tells both teams that like last night thay must cook the ultimate three course dish for the judges. The best scores of the night will face off against Leigh and Princess Jennifer. Apparently there is a little romance between Rocco and Carly! Interesting!
Nic & Rocco:
Entree – Bird’s Nest Pasta
Main – King George Whiting with Shellfish Mousseline
Dessert – Dolci Misti – Chocolate Mousse Panna Cotta and Zuppa Inglese
Carly & Emily:
Entree – Dukkah crusted scallops with beetroot & goat cheese salad
Main – Duck confit with duck neck sausage and white bean puree
Dessert – Persian Love Cakes with panna cotta and fresh figs.
Nic & Rocco: The pasta is a family recipe and is called “birds nest” for it’s presentation style. The boys pasta is tearing and they really don’t need this – so they change the setting on the pasta machine and it’s looking good. The boys make the bechamel and are going well and the pasta looks yummy.
Carly & Emily: They get the seasoned beetroots in the oven and need to start dessert and get the main started. The girls get on to the “love” cakes and they seem extra sweet! The girls have a laugh that they are both making panna cotta – I’d be crying going against Italians making it. The girls are now starting on the confit – they are raring ahead! The girls are making their own dukkah mix when they realise that the scallops are massive – so they cut them in half. Call the paramedics – I think Manu just had a heart attack! He doesn’t know what they are thinking and is worried they will now over cook. The scallops are burning – where’s the oil in the pan?
Nic & Rocco: The boys plate up and the pasta is looking awesome and will appeal to Manu as there is plenty of sauce.
Carly & Emily: The dukkah is burnt and scallop raw – so they add oil, duh! The girls plate up and hope that all is well.
Now for tasting the entrees
Nic & Rocco: The judges say it’s classic italian and Nonna would be proud, yet needs more bechamel and filling.
Carly & Emily: The scallops are cooked well, but there is now too much dukkah compared to scallop as they cut them in half. The flavour of the scallop has gone. Oh, oh.
Nic & Rocco: The boys check their panna cotta and it’s split – they will have to make it again!
Carly & Emily: The confit is cooking and they start on their sausage – putting filling into duck neck skin.
Nic & Rocco: The boys aren’t stressing (even if Pete thinks so) – but time is against them with this panna cotta disaster. Nic seasons the fish with NUTMEG instead of pepper and Pete says this could cost them the competition. The boys are presenting the fish in a ramekin – it doesn’t really look like a main course, but they are serving it with spinach – nutmeg and spinach is yummy. The boys make a sponge for dessert – but bloody Rocco has used plain flour instead of SRF! Whats up Rocco – don’t wanna upset the girlfriend! Rocco has the sponge made – and only takes 3 minutes – WOW! Need that recipe – I dont get that. The boys are frantic and things aren’t looking good.
Carly & Emily: The girls are stressed – and Pete is worried that the sausages are all uneven in size and the judges think they will be undercoooked as they are running out of time. The duck is looking good and they are browning it off and the sausages are looking ok – just ok.
8 minutes to go
Nic & Rocco: The boys are onto their mousse and test the fish – the fish is great and you can’t taste the nutmeg and they plate up. It looks FABULOUS! They have taken it out of the ramekins and had just used them for shape – how clever. With a king prawn on top – I am dying to eat it.
Carly & Emily: The sausages are cooked and the girls think it will be “winner, winner, winner – duck dinner”! The girls hope the duck is cooked well – but don’t test it. Plating up is prooving to be a problem though – Carly is just so nervous. The dish looks average to me, but the confit looks extra crispy – mmmm.
Nic & Rocco: Pete loves the fish, all love the sauce – but the boys have placed an edible flower on the plate and no one understands it! I think it’s pretty – but as Liz says it should be for a cold dish.
Carly & Emily: The duck is amazing but isn’t falling off the bone like confit should – the sausage needed more time – nothing on the plate is perfect.
It’s looking like a SA final.
Nic & Rocco: The boys are praying the panna cotta is set and thank goodness it is and they did them again. Oh dear poor Rocco has dropped some – thank goodness they are set enough! Rocco has lost his mojo. The boys have tried their Inglese and it’s floury – no matter how much alcohol they add.
Carly & Emily: The girls panna cotta is stuck and they refuse to serve them in the plastic cups – so are putting in a water bath so they release – but that will melt them a bit – oh dear.
With 5 minutes to go –
Nic & Rocco: The boys add a couli to their panna cotta and hope they are set – the boys presentation is beautiful again, yet they are very worried.
Carly & Emily: The panna cotta being stuck is stressing Pete and they are melting all over the plate. This is BAD!
Nic & Rocco: Mousse is lovely, there is too much raspberry and all the desserts are very sweet – the girls have done better.
Carly & Emily: The panna cotta is melted – but the judges love it – the sweetness is lovely and has the taste of Persia. Karen Martini says it’s the best dessert she has had on MKR!
Their have been ups, downs and in-betweens – next is the scores!
