Sydney Swans Vs Greater Western Sydney last Saturday a ratings hit for 7mate in Sydney

Sydney’s first local AFL derby on Saturday March 24 has proved a ratings success for its Sydney broadcast on 7mate with 82,000 tuning in Sydney, reaching a peak audience of 98,000.

Sydney Swans Vs Greater Western Sydney was easily the most watched show on any digital channel for Saturday night in Sydney. It’s Sydney figure of 82,000 even outdid the 66,000 in Sydney that watched the movie Cast Away that aired on Seven’s main channel that night – who says Seven should NOT have aired the AFL on the main channel?

In Brisbane, 33,000 watched the AFL, giving the 7mate broadcast a total average audience of 115,000 over the four hour broadcast.

In traditional AFL markets, where the game aired on Seven’s main channel, Sydney Swans Vs Greater Western Sydney was watched by a further 574,000 with 374,000 in Melbourne alone.

7mate’s 5 city channel share for the night was 4.3% – placing the channel as the most watched digital channel for the night, just ahead of ELEVEN’s 4.1% share, and ABC News 24′s 4.1% share bolstered by the Queensland state election.

Nationally, 251,000 tuned into the AFL season opener live on Pay TV’s new Fox Footy Channel.

Total audience across all broadcasts (except for free to air regional) was 825,000 – not bad exposure for the new Sydney team.

All broadcasts aired live in all markets.
