Virginia Trioli talks with milliner to the stars and fashion icon Philip Treacy OBE.
Having designed stand out looks for Lady Gaga, Grace Jones, Sarah Jessica Parker and members of the Royal Family as well as creating hats for collections by Chanel, Valentino and Ralph Lauren – Treacy has become famous for his ‘other worldly’ haute couture.
Born and raised in a tiny village in the West of Ireland, Treacy moved to Dublin to study fashion at age 18 and went on to win a place in the MA fashion design course at the Royal College of Art in London.
A great part of Treacy’s success resulted from his partnership with the late Isabella Blow, a highly regarded style editor. What started as a chance meeting between the then fashion design student Treacy and Blow led to a strong and creative friendship which met a tragic end with Blow’s suicide in 2007.
More recently, Treacy had the honour of producing over 30 hats for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, but there was one particular design that resulted in a lot of negative press for its wearer, Princess Beatrice. Treacy remarks that it’s one of his favourite hats because it annoyed so many people.
Featuring stunning images and footage of Treacy’s hats from high profile magazines and the catwalk, this program offers an incredible glimpse into Treacy’s life and his love for creating pieces that are viewed by many not just as accessories, but works of art.
