6:00pm – Sunday, April 15 on ABC1
Hosted by author and actor William McInnes, and produced by the team that brought you Collectors, Auction Room is all about the emotion, the drama and the personal stories of people compelled to sell off their cherished possessions. There is always a reason, either bitter or sweet, why owners subject themselves to the nail-biting business of waiting for the hammer to drop.
We meet Paddy Twohill, an Elvis tribute artist whose favourite stage prop simply has to go. It is a mammoth pink 1960 Cadillac coupe. Paddy has used the beloved coupe in hundreds of Elvis shows and Elvis-themed weddings over 20 years, but overheads have made it too expensive to maintain.
Reluctantly, Paddy has consigned it to Shannons, the classic car auction specialists and on the night of the auction, he will sit with William as bidders battle it out for the right to drive the dream car out of Paddy’s life forever.
And just one row away in the standing-room-only auction, another devotee chews her fingernails. Lyn Sewell, a retired teacher and active cake-decorator, is parting with her pride and joy – a jaunty, impeccably restored 1953 MG TD sports car.
Lyn and her husband Rick have lavished attention and money on the car for 14 years, to the extent that it is probably the best MG TD in Australia. However, dedicated people like Lyn eventually realise their obsession has consumed them, and they must let go. This is the moment and she’s nervous, sad, but resigned. It’s not going to be easy.
Please be advised that auction results are embargoed until broadcast.
