An Attractive And Devoted Couple, Brian (alan Bates) And Sheila (janet Suzman) Always Led An Enviable Life, vegetable, leaving Brian and Sheila to cope by resorting to grim humour. Yet, despite their daughter’s need for attention constantly interfering with their marriage, they steadfastly refuse to have her institutionalised.
When the child suffers an attack one night, Brian only pretends to go for medication. Instead, he re-enters the house and takes Joe out of Sheila’s sight. When the attack subsides and she no longer seems to have any pulse, Brian returns home. But because a panicked Sheila rushes her to the hospital, Joe still manages to survive.
Back at home with their daughter the following morning, Sheila tries to comfort Brian by promising to put Joe in a home so they can take a real vacation.
