Previous Episode: The Block Season Five – Unlocked #2
The first rooms are done, but who is going to win?
We’re coming to the end of the week as in 24 hours, the first room reveals will occur. Brad is making sure all the construction is complete in the house while Lara goes to pick up the furniture. They don’t know if their couch will fit through the door. Brad tells Lara that he’s tried it, which he hasn’t, to calm her down. They go to try to fit it in. Meanwhile, Dan & Dani seem to be ahead of schedule, but they are cracking under each other’s stress. Dan hardly slept last night! Dale & Sophie are excited to finish their first room. Sophie has a lighting piece installed which she is so happy with. It does look nice. Finally, Mike & Andrew have hit a snag. One of the brothers moved electrical cords which is making the sparky’s job hell. They should have left it up to the professionals to move electrical cables.
Meanwhile, Brad goes to fit the lounge into the room, and it doesn’t go in. This is going to put him in massive strife.

After the break, Dan & Dani find out their overheads are the wrong colour; Mike & Andrew fix their electrical problem and Brad continues to find out ways to fit his couch in the door. They do have one plan that looks like it could work- but it’s a delicate situation of standing the couch on its side and lowering/sliding it into the room. Meanwhile, Dani goes to change the overheads but they can’t because they’re installed. They’ll have to replace it next week. I love how Dani ‘thanks’ the shop assistant. Back at the block, the boys talk about how the girls are ‘pretending to shop’. We can see clearly that they are actually working harder than the boys!
The last night is a late one for all contestants, even for the confident Dan & Dani. The brothers pull an all-nighter. In the morning, Brad & Lara have been out all night shopping (as an Adelaidean, I can’t fathom the convenience of 24 hour shopping!). Dan & Dani continue to fight while Dale & Sophie are just plodding along, getting the finishing touches together. Speaking of putting finishing touches together, Dani finds time to shave Dan’s back.
Soon, time runs dry, and the contestants finish their first rooms. Now, for judgement.
Room Reveal Score
Scores revealed at a brand new location- a rustic HQ area with a wall of ex contestant’s pictures. This year, they will be scored out of 30- 10 points per judge.
Dan & Dani’s room (Only fourth bedroom)
Neale Whittaker: Doesn’t feel the modern feel is bad. Likes the bookshelf. Likes the coloured cushions on the bed.
Shaynna Blaze: Doesn’t like the fourth bedroom idea or the modern feel. Shaynna doesn’t like the curtain at all, or the cushions on the bed.
John McGrath: Interesting choice but doesn’t think the fourth bedroom is going to be a hit. Likes the desk and its depth.

Dale & Sophie’s room
Neale Whittaker: Agrees with John on the vintage comment. Believes there are some clever touches. Loves the dining table. Loves the lights but hates the chairs. Doesn’t like the Scotty’s Challenge piece of furniture.
Shaynna Blaze: Disappointed with the curtains and feels it is overwhelming. Likes the simple fireplace. Thinks the light is brilliant. Doesn’t like the Scotty’s Challenge piece of furniture.
John McGrath: John loves vintage, but feels this is more of a showroom of vintage goods. Loves the execution. Thinks if they had different chairs, the room would be less depressed. Thinks it was smart for them to open up the room.

Brad & Lara’s room
Neale Whittaker: Is wowed. Thinks it is different and glamorous. Likes the armchair but not its positioning. Thinks their neutral look has been cleverly implemented.
Shaynna Blaze: Likes the modern elements of the vintage roof. Feels the versatility in the room could be a bonus. Isn’t so keen on the fireplace.
John McGrath: Thinks it is a bit sterile but likes the state of the art technology.

Mike & Andrew’s room
Neale Whittaker: Like’s the retro feel. Neale would have taken away one of the room lights. Neale loves the artwork but not the position. It is here they realise it is a foldaway bed which does it for him.
Shaynna Blaze: Great first impressions, colours are great. Loves the marble fireplace. Would have liked to see their cabinet over the fireplace. Isn’t so happy with detail. Thinks the foldaway bed is clever.
John McGrath: Also impressed by the first impression. Not sure about the footy in the fireplace. Isn’t so happy with the mantle section of the fireplace.

So, Dan & Dani have won the first week- winning $5,000 for the bank! And next week’s room is…upstairs…for the master bedroom! And ensuite! This is traditionally a tough week- but there is $10,000 up for grabs. But, one more piece of business to do…oh I know what this is! And with no further ado- Rod from last year’s Rod & Tanya team- comes up and gives Brad & Lara a chump hat! They have to wear the hat for 24 hours.
