Recap: The Block Season Five – Shelley Craft Challenge #2

Previous Episode: The Block Season Five – Room Reveal #1

Shelley’s back and she has another challenge waiting in the wings! And these contestants could do with the cash!

The contestants have put tools down and are having a barbecue to celebrate their first room reveal. Scott then comes out and reminds them of the hell of a week ahead of them- with two rooms to complete, one of them being a wet room, they can’t possibly fit anything else in- well, Scott does! He gives them a history lesson- telling them the houses were built in the mid-1850. Melbourne was called ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ because of the gold rush. They’d like some of that gold, he is betting- and they will get the chance! He has some gold digging licenses for tomorrow’s crack-of-dawn challenge, which is also a sleepover! A 2-day challenge in a week they have to do two rooms! Ridiculous!

The next day, the contestants are still nervous about the coming week. Dan is particularly nervous as he and Dani are the builders, while other contestants have their own builders. With that, they head off to Sovereign Hill. On the way, Dan thinks of odd ideas, such as a dumbwaiter. The brothers are also coming up with ideas.

Opinion point: Should a 2-day challenge occur in the same week as a two-room reveal?

Challenge Brief: There is $10,000 worth of gold worth here today. Their search begins 100ft below the ground. They have pouches to put their gold in. There are three phases. One, the gold hunt, requires them to choose a tunnel and bring back as many gold nuggets as possible.

With that, they head off. Dani & Dan go for the gold hunting challenge first and are quite lucky, finding nuggets left, right and centre. The contestants sneak into each other’s tunnels to nick any leftover nuggets. They then head back to Shelley who says the challenge will continue above ground. Scotty then comes out with some horses. They all then head to their next challenge.

Challenge Brief: There are holes littered around a riverbed. There is gold in the holes and they have 10 minutes to grab as much as they can.

Again, they are all quite lucky, but not like the last time. Not sure what this challenge has to do with renovating- but it’s fun. Dan kicks his gold over by accident but they pick it all up before the time runs up.

Opinion point: Who’s going to have the best advantage in this challenge?

Dan & Dani find four pieces, Brad & Lara grab seven, Andrew & Mike grab three and Sophie & Dale come up with five.

Challenge Brief: It’s time to pan for gold.

Using pans on a constructed creek, they strike it rich once more. The problem is that if someone finds a good spot, everyone else comes along! The challenge is soon up. Shelley is waiting for them to tell them who has won the challenge. I particularly like the wanted posters of the contestants.

So, who won?
