Recap: The Celebrity Apprentice Australia Season Two – Challenge & Elimination #2

Previous Episode: The Celebrity Apprentice Australia Season Two – Launch

Fiona O’Loughlin was unceremoniously eliminated in the first elimination of the year last night, but it’s all over red rover for one more! Who will it be?

The contestants head to Observatory Hill, where Mark and the execs are waiting to brief them on the challenge.

Today’s Challenge: Contestants must set up and run a pop-up shop. Each of them will create a defining life moment-orientated art piece and sell it at the shop. The team who raises the most money will win. Mark Britt from Bing will help them by giving $20,000 to the best art piece creator.

Straightforward, and the celebs already know what they want to do. David is sent over to the girls’ team for this challenge. Patti is made to join the boys’ team. They then choose PM’s. Dicko and Ben clash over who should do it. The team do a vote. Meanwhile, it seems Marion is going to get it for the girls.

Project Managers: Marion becomes PM for Fortune. Dicko becomes PM for Platinum.

The teams head to the one building where both shops are located. In 3 hours, they have to create art from junk. A vintage task! Marion finds it hard to conjure ideas from her girls when Tania rubs Lauryn up the wrong way. It’s Charlotte who tells Tania to shut up in the end. Meanwhile, the boys are discussing money. Ben and Dicko are not doing well here with Ben looking like a bit of a sore loser over the PM debacle. He doesn’t give Dicko definite answers, making Dicko’s job hard. Dicko thinks he has a problem with authority, calling Ben a convict.

Meanwhile, the girls discuss their personal art pieces. Charlotte is doing a kids unit. Lauryn wants her piece to reflect her dad’s death, which occurred near The Rocks. David wants to make a Berlin Wall. Tania and David team up to do promotional and publicity things. In the car, Lauryn and Charlotte continue to bitch about Tania’s loudness. They promise to stick up for each other.

Opinion point: Who would make a better PM, Dicko or Ben?

2 hours remain and Marion and David argue because David refuses to wear a pink bandana. David makes a gay comment and while it wasn’t offensive, it does make Charlotte a little antsy. David’s lack of being able to find things also grates. Meanwhile, Nathan begins to make something out of denim, scoring $40,000 from Jeans West. I remember when Polly was scorned for not being able to rake much in due to being a reality TV star. Nathan is turning tables! Jason is a bit jealous of this, as he is aiming to make the big bucks this week. Meanwhile, some of the girls head out shopping. Lauryn buys things for her pictures. Team Platinum then goes out for supplies. The teams bump into each other and there’s a bit of tension. Nathan returns to find out that the team has scored $15,000 on condition that he gets body painted. He’ll do it! The girls are painting and creating very fast as time runs out. Ben meanwhile has no idea what he wants to create. He is going for a semi-industrial piece, but it doesn’t relate to anything.

The Hoff is still talking himself up a bit, but he admits to not being the best painter. He creates his piece, but Marion is not a fan on his colours. Patti meanwhile is creating Bert’s face out of a mask.

Then, Dicko says he should be painted, instead of Nathan, because he’s more famous. Ben is worried about this as this means reselling. Dicko disagrees and another round of fighting begins. Nathan is just tired, being in the middle of it. It seems Nathan will still be painted.

With an hour to start, David Hasselhoff goes out to drag people in to the store to form a queue. Meanwhile, Nathan gets painted, and Patti is quite getting into it! The girls begin on their group project, which is a bike wheel, on a door, with their faces on balls dangling from it. They name it the Wheel of Fortune. Meanwhile, Paulini from Australian Idol 2003 turns up, and in reference to the ‘gold dress’ incident, he has made a statue of someone wearing a gold dress with the word sorry printed on the stomach. Paulini accepts the apology. I personally didn’t think people still cared about it 9 years later, but OK!

Then, doors open and potential buyers go in. There’s a lot of Bing PP in this as we see how the teams use technology to aid sell their products. Marion sells her piece for $5,000. Charlotte sells her kids set piece for $10,000. David is selling pieces of his wall and the first piece goes to a German!

Opinion point: Who has done best in this challenge?

Tania is still giving the girls a headache with some painful comments aimed at people’s art pieces. Charlotte thinks Tania is sabotaging Lauryn. Dick Smith also heads to this event. 5 minutes left, and many contestants are working at getting as many dollars as possible. Jason does some crunches while Ben ups the price of a can that falls off his piece of art! Charlotte tries to sell the group piece which is being ignored. People blame Marion for this. The challenge then ends, and both teams are happy to call it a day.

It’s then time for the boardroom.

The Boardroom

Mark walks in after the contestants and asks them a few questions.

$20,000 Best Pop Up Piece Winner: Team Platinum

Answers to Questions: Dicko acknowledges his ‘bif’ with Ben, but thinks he got the job done. Vince thinks Dicko did a good job. Jason thinks he, Dicko, Ben and Vince could do PM. Nathan, who was left out, thinks he was used as a bit of a tool. Dicko compliments Nathan, saying he could be PM easily. Ben thinks he can win without the Hoff drawcard. David says the difference between working with boys and girls is the pink bandana. Marion admits to being terrified at being PM. She couldn’t have asked for a better team. She says David brought much needed publicity. Marion admits appointing Tania as David’s manager. David calls it a smart move. Marion says David was her weakest player because he was difficult to manage. Tania thinks Lauryn is the weakest player because she talks over the top of others (yes, this gets some gasps). Lauryn concedes everyone thinks Tania talks over people. Contestants discuss their pieces, especially Dicko and his piece.

Money Raised: Both Teams raised a total of $204,373. Team Platinum won the challenge. $70,120 goes to Marion’s Save The Kids Charity on Dicko’s request. The rest goes to Dicko’s charity, Australian Children’s Music Foundation.

Team Fortune will head into elimination.

What Went Wrong? Marion says the fact they couldn’t sell their team piece contributed to their low dollars. Not using David’s resources well also contributed. Mark doesn’t like the team piece at all, calling it ‘pathetic’. I agree. Tania thinks Marion will look back at her time as PM and think of what she could do better.

Elimination results

Marion, David, Tania are chosen for Elimination.

Judges discuss the three contestants individually before they come back in for final questioning.

David: Says he did what he thought was enough to bring in the money and crowds. Mark would love to see him use his brand better and not just do what others tell him to do.

Tania: Mark thinks she is divisive.

Marion: Mark thinks she is calm and eloquent. He would like to see her front up.

Elimination Result: Marion Grasby…You’re Fired!

For the second season, a reality television star has been eliminated…second! Still, Nathan remains. Marion goes home quite upset and I just can’t shake the feeling Tania and David have remained because of their brand and controversy and not their performance to date. Ask me, Marion killed it today.

The Celebrity Apprentice Australia next airs Apr 25 at 8PM on Nine.

Just a couple of things ->

‘In the car, Lauryn and Charlotte continue to bitch about Tania’s loudness’.

They weren’t bitching, they were just stating a fact about Tania. Charlotte was trying to talk Lauryn into standing up for herself because Charlotte wasn’t going to always be there to do it for her.

Also, ‘David refuses to wear a pink bandana. David makes a gay comment and while it wasn’t offensive…’.

He said that he wouldn’t wear a pink bandana because it was gay. Although you may not think it wasn’t offensive, some people do - he used the word gay in a derogatory way which shouldn’t be just glossed over.

And finally – ‘I personally didn’t think people still cared about it 9 years later, but OK!’

it was about Dicko’s personal life defining moment. Regardless of when it happened, it’s something that impacted his life.

      Hi Nick,

Thanks for the comments! Love your observations!
Well, I do agree that Tania was loud, and I definitely think she should have been eliminated, but the way Lauryn and Charlotte were addressing the issue in the car was definitely bitching. It wasn’t ‘bad’ bitching, and Charlotte and Lauryn were definitely correct in their opinions, but it wasn’t a ‘discussion’.

I guess it depends on who you are whether or not David’s comments were offensive. To me, a comment is only offensive when it is meant by the commenter to be offensive. As I don’t think David meant it to be offensive to anyone, I think it was harmless. If a boy was asked to put on a dress and he said ‘no, it’s girly’, is that derogatory to women? No. So I don’t see how this is any different. Besides, what is written in my blogs reflect MY OWN opinions only and may not be reflective of other people’s ideas- so if I don’t think its offensive, sorry Nick, I’m going to say so- I don’t think that’s ‘glossing things over’.

I’m not talking about the defining moment, I’m talking about his apology. By the way he did it and how Paulini reacted, it seemed as if he hadn’t apologised once since the incident 9 years ago (which is untrue). But it was still heartfelt and nice, I don’t think anyone was denying that.
