MasterChef Australia Season Four – Kath von Witt Eliminated (Recap)

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – A Very Prickly Mexican Invention Test

It’s Andrew vs. Julia vs. Kath in this year’s fourth elimination. Who will enter the final 20 and who will fall at 21?

These contestants are getting ready for their elimination battle before they head to the kitchen and get stuck into it.

Challenge Brief: It’s a pressure test. Maggie Beer is here today to present them with their challenge. She shows them that today they have to make…one of Maggie’s famous cakes! Very delicate, sweet and savoury that cake is! Not only this, they also have to make some ice-cream and a wafer dessert.

Conditions: They must tip the cake out in front of the judges. They have 90 minutes to do ALL of this.

Progress: Their time begins and they get cooking. Kath hates following a recipe, and it isn’t long before she does something wrong by not adding sugar syrup to the ice-cream.

Meanwhile, the top three dish makers from yesterday, Alice, Mindy and Dalvinder, go visit Buddy Valastro for a private MasterClass on how to make cakes. His cakes are really amazing!

Meanwhile, back in the kitchen, Kath is still in a mess. Thankfully, she is able to put the syrup into the ice-cream before it sets. She hopes it all goes well from here. Meanwhile, Andrew cuts the raisins for his cake…however they’re meant to be for the wafer! He’s lost a lot of time doing this. Maggie comes around to give Kath some help on her caramel. She appreciates the help.

Kath is making her cake and she has no idea how her batter should look like. She has Amina giving her encouragement though, so she isn’t struggling too much. Andrew is going quite slowly, and he only has 45 minutes to go. It’s not enough time to cook his cake. Even the judges are telling him to calm down.

Maggie thinks Julia is doing well, but not as well as she would have thought. She thinks Kath is ‘in tune’ with it. Andrew is a bit of a worry. Julia however is a bit clumsy. She forgot to close the door on her blast chiller, which may affect her in the future. Meanwhile, Kath is so far ahead, I’m expecting her to book a holiday in Hawaii which she can enjoy before the challenge ends.

With five minutes to go, Kath’s cake looks nice. In contrast, Andrew’s isn’t looking too healthy. Time is soon up and it’s time to taste.

Tasting & Results

Andrew: Maggie says the cake is a bit undercooked. The judge’s moans indicate a cringeworthy cut of the cake as it collapses. They do like the caramel. George finds the dish to be sweet and Gary thinks the grapes are a bit ‘tart’.

Julia: Maggie loves the look of the cake and the look of the caramel. Maggie loves the ice-cream and Gary calls the cake ‘feathery light’. Matt compliments the biscuit.

Kath: The cake has collapsed, which confuses Matt however Gary thinks it is because she didn’t follow the recipe enough and took her cake out too soon. Matt loves the bit that is cooked, calling it light. Maggie loves her biscuit.

Result: The MasterChef contestant finishing in Twenty-First place is…Kath

MasterChef Australia next airs May 29 at 7PM on TEN.
