MasterChef Australia Season Four – MasterClass Friday

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – The Third Elimination

Feeling hungry? I think we have time for one last serving of MasterChef!

We’re back in the kitchen with Gary and Matt Moran.

Lesson 1: Gary’s Mum’s Lamb Stew

Apparently, the main inspiration for Gary doing this dish is to show them how to save on time. He pulls out the pressure cooker. It’s a very interesting dish, and it’s very interesting watching him prepare the actual stew. All seems pretty simple as well. While the pressure steamer is working its magic, Matt comes in for dessert. Gary also shows them how to reduce the stew after it has been in the pressure cooker. Gary is going to make his dumplings in this stew juice!

Lesson 2: Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta with cherry soup.

This dessert should go perfectly with Gary’s Mum’s Lamb stew. Again, this doesn’t require too much skill, but obviously more skill will give better results. Half way through, Gary drinks the bloody egg nog! He finishes his dessert before Gary finishes his main course!

Lesson 3: Dumplings

An ode to this week’s challenge and yet another relatively simple dish to make. It’s a great way to use that stew stock, instead of just having it boil away. Kylie gets a taste of the dough. It’s then plate up time.

The two dishes go well together. Emma and Andy are allowed to taste. Poor Emma, getting the whole ‘you lost your boyfriend’ mockery.

Lesson 4: Raw Food

They will be making an Asian Style Tasting plate in a bid to help the contestants learn to cook with raw food. Alice will help Matt Moran, who is the chef for this segment. The first thing they will do is the Vietnamese Style Salad. Matt teaches Alice how to cut properly. The next thing to do is a Thai Salad, involving raw prawns. The last thing to do is the Japanese style tuna. Matt & Alice compare plating techniques. Alice and Amina get to taste.

Lesson 5: When to Use What?

Gary will be taking simple ingredients with Matt and showing them how they can use them in dishes, like Gnocchi. The judges have a few crates of ingredients in front of them and they run through them and when you can use them/what you should look for. Matt then leaves as Gary creates his potato Gnocchi.

Audra helps him part way through it. Debra and Julia are asked to help taste, haha.

To end the episode, the contestants head upstairs for a nice dinner.

MasterChef Australia next airs May 27 at 7.30PM on TEN.

A great episode of MasterClass tonight. Before tonight I never know that prawns can be “cooked” by being marinated in lime juice for 30 minutes. Also for this episode, instead of Gary and Matt Moran offering their top 3 tips for each dish, they ask the contestants what they have learned from seeing the cooking demonstrations.

    Yeah I noticed that difference!
