MasterChef Australia Season Four – Matt Howell Eliminated (Recap)

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Yum Cha Challenge

There are just too many contestants in this game! I think it’s time to kick one of them out!

Contestants facing Elimination: Andy, Emma, Mindy, Filippo, TK ,Matt, Debra (Captain), Julia, Amina, Andrew and Alice.

They walk into the kitchen to see a row of cloches sitting on a bench. Matt, Gary & George are present today.

Challenge Brief: The challenge will take place over two rounds.

Round 1: Taste Test: They have to guess the 25 ingredients found in a tagine. The first five contestants to make mistakes will progress to the next round. The rest will be safe from elimination.

Progress: Amina is first. She guesses okra. She is correct. Julia is next. She guesses Green Olives correctly. TK is third. She guesses almonds which is correct. Emma guesses dates correctly. Deb guesses Pistachio correctly. Andrew guesses the garnish as coriander, more specifically, fresh coriander, which is correct. Filippo guesses lamb and is correct. Andy is next with lemon, more specifically preserved lemon and is correct. Alice guesses sumac correctly, and Matt goes for lima beans which is also correct. Yoghurt correctly guessed by Mindy there. Amina goes for cinnamon which is correctly. Julia and TK are correct with their next guesses. Emma then goes for coriander seed. This is also correct. Deb is next and goes for peanuts.

Deb is wrong, and she is the first person to move on to the second round. Andrew is next and goes for turmeric. He is also wrong and faced elimination alongside Deb. Filippo and Andy are then correct with their guesses. Alice guesses correctly with fennel. Matt goes for pine nuts and is wrong. Mindy guesses bayleef and Amina goes olive oil. Both are correct. Julia goes onion and is correct. TK goes for fennel seeds and is correct. Emma then goes to taste again. She goes for honey. She is wrong. Filippo goes up and tries paprika. He is wrong.

Result Round Up- Round 1: Deb, Andrew, Matt, Emma and Filippo face elimination. Andy, Mindy, TK, Julia, Amina and Alice are safe.

Round 2: To use any five of the ingredients featured in the tagine to create a wonderful dish.

Conditions: They will be given 45 minutes and some basic ingredients at their disposal.

Process: Andrew is doing a fennel three-ways, which sounds great. He has chosen quite a few of the veggies from the dish. Emma has gone for the lamb and some of the nuts. Many people have gone for the yoghurt. Filippo wants to push himself extra to get over the line. Matt is doing a bit of frenching with his lamb. Fennel seems popular today too. Deb is going for a fennel salad and Matt wonders if it will be a whole dish. Another ingredient, preserved lemon, is not a particular favourite of Matt’s.

Andrew is going fine with his fennel dish however he forgot to take the lemon out of the puree, so now it tastes of lemon. Matt’s cutlets of lamb have burned, and he is now frenzied. This could be good bye Matt. Emma is stressed out and pretends she is no longer a crier. Hey, Julie was a crier up to the point of winning, so as long as she cooks good food, she should be fine. Soon, their time is up.

The contestants say their goodbyes and leave before the bottom five head to tasting.

Tasting & Results

Debra

Cooking: Braised fennel and Almond salad.

Comments: George loves the braised fennel, calling her dish delicious. He calls it a smashing dish. Matt also loves the flavours. Gary compliments it also.

Filippo

Cooking: Sicilian Salad and Date & pistachio granita.

Comments: Gary loves both of the elements, but isn’t sure they work together.

Comments: The lamb is a bit rare. Matt loves the full dish but says the lamb is undercooked.

Who would have thought that Beau swapping Matt with Audra in the Chinese Yum Cha challenge would eventually lead to Matt’s elimination?
