Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Kath von Witt Eliminated (Recap)
Mindy is back in the immunity pot for a second time running. Can she pull off a performance fit for that pin?
Immunity Challenge
Brief: Today, there are no heating implements because today’s challenge is all about raw food, which they were taught in last week’s MasterClass. There is also only one power cord for the both of them to share. Again, they have to plate up an entrée, main and dessert featuring the one core ingredient. Shaun will choose this ingredient. He chooses the kiwifruit.
Conditions: An open pantry. Mindy has 60 minutes time to produce the three dishes. Shaun only has half an hour.
Chef’s Against Mindy: Shaun Presland (Executive chef at Sake Restaurants) with fellow chefs Shimpei and Ali.
Mindy’s Team: Joining Mindy is Amina and Audra.
Progress: Mindy begins her half-hour advantage now and all three girls head to the pantry. Audra is doing a sashimi salmon with some sort of curry paste. That’s where the kiwifruit is going! Mindy is doing a dessert which is a very sophisticated-sounding fruit salad. Amina faces troubles cutting her beef fillet thinly, however Matt gives them some tips.
Shaun briefs with his team what he wants from this challenge. They soon begin their 30 minutes. They get into it straight away. Their knife skills are AMAZING. Their entrée is a scallop Carpaccio made by Shimpei. Main is seafood ceviche made by Shaun. Kiwi and coconut cream is on dessert by Ali. Game on.
Both teams are doing it tough, but it doesn’t take long for Shaun and his crew to move up beside them in terms of time. When Audra slices her salmon, she finds bones. This is not good. There’s not much time left.
Somehow though, everyone manages to plate up what they want and Mindy can only hope for the best. Shaun actually plates up early and offers Mindy some help! He seems to do more bad than good.
Tasting & Results
Entrée
Team Mindy Cooks: Cured Beef Salad with Thai Dressing (Amina)
Team Mindy Comments: Matt says the beef is soft and tender and thinks there is a balance with the acidic kiwifruit. George can taste the kiwifruit, but hates how the beef has been cut. Gary thinks they’ve done a great job.
Team Shaun Cooks: Scallop Carpaccio
Team Shaun Comments: Gary thinks the scallops look clean and fresh. He thinks the dish is acidic and can’t pick the flavours out. Gary says the acid flavour is not quite right. George can’t pick up kiwifruit.
Entrée Results: Team Mindy WIN
Main
Team Mindy Cooks: Sashimi of Salmon with Green Curry Dressing (Audra)
Team Mindy Comments: Despite the weird look of the dish, the judges are wowing over the taste of the dish. They love it. George says there is a lot of clarity. Matt applauds the use of the kiwifruit.
Team Shaun Cooks: Seafood Ceviche with Kiwi Fruit.
Team Shaun Comments: Gary says the dish is fresh and clean and very ‘Japanese’. Matt says the combination of the kiwifruit and lobster works really well.
Main Results: Team Mindy WIN
Desserts
Team Mindy Cooks: Mango & Kiwi Carpaccio with Vanilla Maple Syrup (Mindy)
Team Mindy Comments: Gary calls it terrible and says it is just sliced fruit. Matt likes the Mango and can see the idea with the kiwi fruit. George says it could be transformed into something beautiful.
Team Shaun Cooks: Kiwi & Coconut Cream
Team Shaun Comments: Gary quite likes this however Matt would have liked more crunch.
Desserts Results: Team Mindy LOSS
Immunity Challenge Result: With two wins (including that spectacular main), Mindy wins MasterChef Australia 2012’s FIRST immunity pin.
