MasterChef Australia Season Four – Sunday Night Mystery Box & Invention Test

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – MasterClass Time!

Its two challenges in one as the top 23 get into some old favourites!

The contestants head to a new week in the kitchen. Boxes are waiting for them on their benches.

Challenge Brief: Mystery Box. Inside the mystery box, are a selection of ingredients- including crab, nuts, coconut, eggs, peas, seeds and pomegranate. Each of these ingredients have to be ‘cracked open’ to reveal their insides.

Conditions: They can use as many ingredients as they like and they have basics to use under their bench. They are looking for the best three dishes. The winner will set themselves up for the invention test. 60 Minute time limit.

Progress: Debra will be cooking a crab for the first time ever! Matt is doing a crab custard! What the HELL?!  Kath should be fine; crab got her into the top fifty. Only problem, she aint using crab today! She’s cooking a cocoa tart. There’s a wide variety of flavours being tested here! I like it! Filippo is making a cake, and it isn’t coming out of its bowl. He soon gets it out with mere minutes to spare. Soon though, their time is up.

Tasting and Results

Debra

Cooking: Upside Down Crab Pudding with Brown Walnut Butter.

Results: Gary calls it light and gooey, savoury and GREAT! Matt says it is exciting as it shows it has a sense that she knows what she should be cooking.

Filippo

Cooking: Lemon Ciambella cake with crème anglaise and caramel sauce.

Results: George calls him confident, saying it tastes delicious. Gary says it is light, which is great. He says it is a nice lemony sponge.

Mindy

Cooking: Blue Swimmer Crab Salad with Egg Nets.

Results: Gary says the crab has been picked and cooked perfectly. George congratulates her, saying her dish is elegant.

Mystery Box Challenge Winner: Filippo.

It’s now time for the invention test, and it takes the form of the ‘Perfect’ challenge used in Junior MasterChef 2011. Today, they have to make the perfect…SANDWICH. The winner will cook for immunity. The three least impressive chefs for the day will cook in a pressure test elimination.

Filippo gets to choose the core ingredient. He can choose from bacon, lettuce or tomato.

Filippo chooses: Tomatoes.

Conditions: Tomatoes don’t have to be the hero, but they must feature. 120 Minute time limit.

Progress: They must make their own bread. Beau seems to be in his element tonight. They all get going with their bread. Filippo is making three types of bread- considering he is a bread man, this should not surprise. Sam is frying his sandwich in DUCK FAT! Lydia is doing a polenta sandwich. She feels her polenta will not pass as bread. This could go either way. Dalvinder is doing a naan bread, which is my favourite! Can’t beat a good garlic naan. Mindy is doing a Malaysian style sandwich. Filippo is happy with his bread when he takes it out. Fifteen minutes to go, and TK is making something that is inspired by a pork bun. Her bread fails apparently, because it is dense. Gary gives her some advice by telling her to cook up an easy dough. Gary helps her through this.

When time is up, there are some creative looking dishes there.

Tasting and Judging

Filippo

Cooking: A Trio of Open Sandwiches

Comments: Gary enjoys his confidence and thinks there is a perfect representation of the core ingredient in his dish. Matt says the dish would be winning in a mystery box however maybe not so much in this challenge.

Sam

Cooking: Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Comments: Matt puts the cardiologist on speed dial. He loves the tomato sauce but says the bread is too dense.

Lydia

Cooking: Polenta Sandwich with Mediterranean vegetables.

Comments: Matt says if he can eat it with his hands, it is a sandwich. He invites Lydia to join him in picking it up. They can, and Matt enjoys it. Gary loves the veggies and gets the sandwich, but says it is a bit oily.

Mindy

Cooking: Murtabak with tomato and cucumber pickle.

Comments: Audra thinks it is brilliant. Matt won’t give any to her because he loves it. He calls it a great dish.

TK

Cooking: Open Flat Bread Sandwich with caramelised pork.

Comments: This doesn’t quite cut it.

Alice

Cooking: New York Style Boiled Bagel

Comments: Gary calls it brave and delicious.

Dalvinder

Cooking: Naan Bread Sandwich.

Comments: Matt calls it absolutely delicious.

Wade

Cooking: Vietnamese Pork Roll

Comments: Gary calls it dense; he’s not a big fan of the pork cooking.

Debra

Cooking: Walnut Bread Sandwich.

Comments: George loves it and calls it a lovely mix of ingredients. Gary cuddles her.

Results: The best dishes of the day are…Mindy, Debra and Dalvinder. A fourth goes into the frame- Filippo, due to the competition. The one to go through to immunity challenge is…Mindy.

The three least impressive dishes belong to…TK, Wade and Lydia.

Amina needs to get the boo-boos out.

MasterChef Australia next airs May 21 at 7PM on TEN.
