8:30pm – Thursday, May 31 on ABC1
Martha Costello (Maxine Peake) is given a high-profile prosecution case against a teacher who is up for attempted murder of a pupil. She is reluctant to take it on, but chambers clerk Billy (Neil Stuke) says it will be good for her interview for Silk.
After reading the brief, Martha thinks the attempted murder charge is wrong and wants to reduce it to gross bodily harm. But she is at loggerheads with the chief prosecutor who will not agree to the change.
As the case continues, Martha is able to make the accused teacher look very guilty, but she is furious as she sees his defending barrister miss countless opportunities for a good defence.
Meanwhile Martha’s pupil Nick Slade (Tom Hughes) has finally got a case of his own. He has to do mitigation for a drink driving case. The solicitor is furious that Billy has sent a baby barrister but with Martha giving Nick some good pointers, he is able to get the driver a suspended sentence.
