MasterChef Australia Season Four – Flavour Matching Mystery Box

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – The Fourth MasterClass

Nineteen are left and ready to take on another week. First up- the usual! Mystery box and Invention test!

Time in the house is getting to some of the contestants, as we see from an opening montage. It is then time to head to the kitchen.

Mystery Box Challenge Brief: Under their boxes are a few ingredients including pineapple, pork cutlet, beetroot, marshmallows, white rum and ciabatta bread. They have to match their ingredients to make a nice meal. Three nice dishes will be picked for tasting and one will win.

Conditions: 60 Minute time limit.

Progress: Beau will be doing a pork cutlet with roast beetroot and Mat comes to see how he is doing. Matt wants his dish to stand out. We hear what other people are doing. Amina can’t touch the pork, nor can she taste it, so she hopes her instincts will get her through. Flames are going up, cutlery is dropping down; it’s a massive challenge! Audra wants to redeem a sweet and sour pork dish she had when she married her husband. During the challenge, Andy burns his hand badly, putting his challenge at risk. Soon their challenge is up.

Tasting & Results

Audra

Cooking: Sweet & Sour Pork.

Comments: Matt says the dish has innovation and great balance. George calls it refined and clever.

Dalvinder

Cooking: Stir-Fried Pork.

Comments: George says the dumplings are lovely and tells Audra that there is a battle on her hands. Gary is wowed and says it is absolutely dead set delicious.

Beau

Cooking: Crumbed Pork Cutlet

Comments: Matt calls it a Beau dish, but polished with care and consideration.

Results: The winner of the challenge is…Dalvinder.

As the winner, Dalvinder gets to choose the core ingredient for the invention test.

Invention Test Brief: It’s a seduction themed challenge- they have to create dishes you want more of. In this challenge, Dalvinder can cook with whatever she wants- she will also have an open pantry. The other contestants must cook with one of the pairs (this is their choice). There are no losers today.

Core Ingredient Options: Strawberries and cream; champagne and caviar and roses and chocolate.

Conditions: 60 minute time limit. Andy must sit out due to his burn. Luckily there are no eliminations.

Progress: The contestants are all cooking ‘for their loved ones’. Sam has gone for the risky caviar combination. Andy is helping Ben cook his; you guessed it, Mexican dish! Alice has also gone for caviar, being Soviet herself. Unfortunately for Kylie, she’s still on the journey to find love.

Tasting & Results

Dalvinder

Cooking: Chocolate Cake

Comments: Matt calls it wonderful and light but says there’s too much chocolate.

Filippo

Cooking: Meringue Mascarpone Cake

Comments: Gary calls it creamy and coconut-y and irresistible. Gary hugs him

Audra

Cooking: Poached Strawberries

Comments: George loves it and gives Audra some encouragement.

Ben

Cooking: Scampi & Caviar Salsa

Comments: Matt loves the dish.

Tregan

Cooking: Lovers Pillows (hmm…)

Comments: Gary makes her feed Matt Preston. He throws roses around to express his love for the dessert.

Beau

Cooking: Grilled Seafood

Comments: He doesn’t use the caviar. Nuff said.

Kylie

Cooking: Chocolate Ravioli

Comments: No comments.

Julia

Cooking: Chocolate & Rose water cake

Comments: She goes into too much detail about one particular night she had so we don’t hear much about the food.

Sam

Cooking: Seafood for two.

Comments: Matt welcomes Sam to the competition.

Mindy

Cooking: A Taste of the ocean.

Comments: It’s not the best dish, but Matt loves the effort and story behind it.

Results: Sam, Filippo and Tregan all impress the most, but there can only be one winner. That person is…Sam!

As the winner, Sam gets a fabulous reward. The contestants are headed for Tasmania this week. Under a big cloche lies a clue for the contestants. It’s the first cook book ever written in Australia. As it was written in Tasmania, this tells the contestants where they’re going.

MasterChef Australia next airs Jun 4 at 7PM on TEN.

I think the producers chose the seduction theme for the invention test since the episode was filmed just after Valentine’s Day. The Tasmanian trip was filmed over a week from February 19.
There are two articles in The Hobart Mercury today about the trip and why Ben broke up with his girlfriend.
During the episode, Sam mentioned 2-3 times about his girlfriend Gemma. Gemma is Australian water polo player Gemma Beadsworth who is a member of the Australian Olympic Team for the upcoming London Olympic Games. In last week’s issue of TV Week, Sam said that since filming of MC finishes just as the Games begin, it will be a battle against time to fly to London to see Gemma in action.
Mindy also said during the invention test tasting that she just ended a relationship. She broke up with her girlfriend of three years just before entering the competition last year.
