Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – MasterClass
*Sniff, sniff*, I smell something fishy…oh, that’s right, none other than the king of seafood Rick Stein is popping in to set these folk a challenge! Exciting stuff!
The contestants are back at the house and Debra has damaged her finger on the glass doors at the house. Amina tells her she needs to go to emergency, which could mean missing out on today. It’s then off to the kitchen.
Mystery Box Challenge: Inside the box is a simple egg. It must be the hero of the dish they create. They will not receive another one if they drop it. The six dishes (one for each row) that are deemed the best will be tasted. The six will be ranked in order of dish quality. The higher the ranking (1 being the highest), the better the reward in the invention test.
Conditions: One hour cooking time. Open pantry.
Progress: Contestants are a bit shocked about only being allowed to use one egg, but there are a few interesting ideas here. Andrew is making egg mayonnaise while Mindy is doing a twice cooked Asian style egg. Ben is cooking with Andy, and they are BOTH doing very different Caesar Salad. Gary isn’t too excited about Andy’s deconstructed version. They want something to stand out. For Kylie’s dessert, she has to separate her egg a few times. She’ll be keeping a close eye on it! Jules is doing a bake egg, Spanish style. It looks very interesting. Mario has trouble shelling his egg properly, and it begins to fall apart in his hand.
Tasting & Result
Jules
Cooking: Spanish Style Bake Egg
Comments: Gary says it looks great, and says it delivers.
Andrew
Cooking: Anchovies and Prawns with egg yolk mayonnaise.
Comments: Matt says the prawns are cooked perfectly but doesn’t like the mayonnaise.
Amina
Cooking: Beef Mince Tagine
Comments: George loves the heat on the egg and the spices.
Kylie
Cooking: Poached Meringues
Comments: Gary loves it so much and loves the idea of it. He attempts to stop the other judges from tasting it.
Mindy
Cooking: Twice-cooked egg.
Comments: Matt had glowing reports about the dish. Fantastic.
Ben
Cooking: Thai Prawn Salad.
Comments: Gary says there is a light balance of flavours and is smitten by the appearance. Matt wants to see Andy’s dish.
Andy
Cooking: Caesar San Choy Bow
Comments: They prefer his dish and Ben is told to go back to the bench. Bit harsh.
Result: The best dish for the day belonged to Kylie. Second place is Mindy. Third place goes to Andy. Fourth place goes do Jules. Fifth place goes to Amina and sixth place is Andrew.
It’s now time for an invention test.
The six contestants are team captains. The rest of the people at their benches are in their teams. The team that wins collectively go into immunity. The team that loses faces immunity.
There is also a special guest- Rick Stein!
Invention Test Challenge: They will be cooking seafood from around the world- from France, Spain, Thailand, UK, Morocco and India. There are also six different types of seafood. There are fish, prawns, mussels and clams, crabs, octopus and botargo. From first to last, the winners of the last challenge get to choose what dish their team cooks, and what nation should inspire that dish.
Kylie: France & Mud crabs.
Mindy: Fish & Thailand.
Andy: Mussels & Spain.
Jules: Prawns & Morocco. (To Amina’s disgrace!)
Amina: Octopus & India. (To Dalvinder’s disgrace!)
Andrew: Botargo & UK.
Conditions: 60 Minutes and open pantry.
Progress: Team Kylie will be doing two types of crab, and she seems to be in her element. Andy doesn’t know why he chose Spain and they seem to be doing some sort of soup. Andrew has NO idea how to marry British food with botargo. The whole group are off put by it. Every contestant seems to have their own mini-dish to do for their group plate. Team Kylie are worried that Rick will pick up on any hint of crab mismanagement, so they attempt to be extra careful about it. Beau is working on his dish and with such a beautiful portion of fish- he accidentally drops it all over the floor! Eek.
He has about 5 minutes to go to make another batch of fish. Pity if their dish turns to shit on this batch! Soon, their whirlwind challenge is up and it’s time for tasting.
Tasting & Results
Team Andy (Andy, Ben & Emma)
Cooking: Spiced Mussel Soup.
Comments: Gary says their soup is super powerful, more than they thought. Rick thinks the food looks ‘Spanish’. Rick likes the spicy mussels.
Team Andrew (Andrew, Dalvinder & Audra)
Cooking: Botargo & Mushroom Pie with parsley salad.
Comments: Gary doesn’t get the pie and thinks it is more of a good mushroom pie. Rick likes the salad and loves the pie, but can’t taste the core ingredient.
Team Mindy (Mindy, Beau & Julia)
Cooking: Steamed Fish In Coconut Broth with crispy fish salad and coconut rice.
Comments: George loved how Mindy led from the front. He calls the dish delicious and yum. Rick says it reflects Thai style food.
Team Kyle (Kyle, Wade & Sam)
Cooking: Mud Crab & Blue Spanner Crab with Pommes Frites and Aioli
Comments: Matt doesn’t like the lack of crunch and flavour. There should have been more and is disappointed. Rick also blasts them for not capturing France in the dish.
Team Amina (Amina, Mario & Filippo)
Cooking: Octopus Masala.
Comments: Rick loves it and calls it ‘local food’.
Team Jules (Jules, Alice & Tregan)
Cooking: Harissa Prawns with couscous and yoghurt dressing.
Comments: Matt says they’ve nailed their flavours and loves the way they’ve treated the prawns. Says the whole thing is delicious. Rick is also happy with the dish.
Results: The winning dish belongs to Team Jules! Jules, Alice & Tregan will fight it out for immunity.
Team UK were the least impressive, meaning Andrew, Audra & Dalvinder will head into elimination.
