MasterChef Australia Season Four – Tasmania Week Begins

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Flavour Matching Mystery Box

Ah Tasmania, a food mecca and a wonderful state! What better way to showcase it through an action packed week of MasterChef?

The contestants leave their house and embark on an adventure to Tasmania. They arrive at the Salamanca Markets where the three judges are waiting for them. For the challenge (to take place tomorrow their time), they will be split into four teams.

Challenge Brief: Contestants must create a takeaway food stall with only produce from the market. They will be judged on the money they make and the quality of the food. The team who has the most money at the end and the team with the highest quality food will win. As winner of yesterday’s challenge, Sam gets to choose his team first. The winners will be allowed to ‘hunt’ for immunity.

Conditions: They can spruik as much as they like, set their own prices and open when they want. They have $500 to spend.

Blue (Sam’s) Team: Sam, Amina, Ben, Mindy and Kylie.

Yellow Team: Audra, Julia, Alice and Debra

Red Team: Mario, Dalvinder, Andrew, Filippo and Andy.

Green Team: Tregan, Jules, Beau, Wade and Emma.

Those teams who have less members will have to deal with the luck of the draw.

Progress: The next day, it’s time to get into it. They all begin as usual, by coming up with a plan! For the blue team, they seem to get together quite well and come up with jobs quickly before getting into it. Will their shopping go well?

The green team also plan quickly. They will be making bacon & egg sandwich, pikelets and pumpkin soup today. The yellow team will be making a nice set of stuff. On their menu are sweet crepes, savoury crepes and BLT sandwiches. The red team are making samosas however their shoppers are taking their time. Filippo is finding it hard to find eggs for the team, as is Andrew. Meanwhile, Ben is using his hometown persona to his advantage.

The green team are now serving, as are the yellow team and they are discussing and deciding on pricing. The green team charge $4 for a bacon and egg sandwich, which they feel is the most adequate price.

The red team can’t get many eggs, and they find it hard to make stuff without them. Gary is also concerned that some of the menu does not suit the weather. Filippo is optimistic. At one point, a strange man announces how much time is left. One of Ben’s mates comes around for a visit! They’re still using him as the drawcard to the blue team! Amina has a problem- her gozleme dough is hard and cooked. She can’t use it and has to make some more.

The yellow team turn their onion relish into a sweet condiment to go with their pikelets after it stuffs up. It is a hit, but their BLT’s now have no relish. Finally, the ted team begin to sell, being the last team to do so with 2 hours to go. When Amina’s next batch of gozleme is cooking, George and Gary are excited.

Dalvinder’s samosas are a hit…until someone brings one back with a ‘not cooked’ complaint. The judges then taste some of the dishes. They are happy with most of what the blue team have plated up- but Matt notices some rind left on bacon.

They then try the red team’s stuff and some undercooked kebabs deter the judges a slight bit. The samosas are not well received. The yellow team have good reviews. They call the green team’s food ‘restaurant quality’.

Soon, time is up, and they’ve done all they can. Who will win? The TWO TEAMS with the most money will play for immunity (I thought the judges would let the highest earning team and the highest quality team go through, but not so)

Result:

Last Place: Green Team ($1,251.80)

Third Place: Red Team ($1,333.70)

Second Place (PLAYING FOR IMMUNITY): Yellow Team ($1,497.50)

WINNER (PLAYING FOR IMMUNITY): Blue Team ($1,788.50)

So, who will get to go for immunity? Ahh, this is where the judges get to decide based on food quality.

Going on to play for Immunity is: BLUE TEAM

Right choice? The blue team will compete for immunity tomorrow. And what is with Sam being on the winning team all the time?

NOTE: I believe that ‘strange man’ is actually a famous Salamanca Market icon?

MasterChef Australia next airs Jun 5 at 7PM on TEN.

A fun-filled episode. The red team spent too much time preparing food and left it too late to sell their products, and deservedly finished out of contention. I feel sorry for the green team, their bacon and egg sandwich was very good and cheap ($4 compared to $5-$6 sold at cafes at breakfast time), the team members probably set their prices too low.
Just on the timing, the judges arrived in Hobart on February 17 followed by the contestants one day later. Tonight’s episode was filmed on Saturday February 19 (Gary mentioned during the episode that the judges set the challenge on a Saturday morning when the market would be full of people). The crew and contestants stayed in Tasmania for one week with support from Tourism Tasmania. The logistics was huge, with the cooking utensils and fridges moved from the MC kitchen in Sydney.

I really liked the episode, but I thought the judging might have been a bit unfair to the Yellow Team (Audra, Julia, Debra and Alice). They cooked their hearts out and made what the judges called “heavenly” crepe dishes. The BLT was a bit dry to eat without a sauce or something gooey, but they didn’t fault it on flavor.

On the other hand, for the Blue Team, there were some mistakes with their dishes: golzeme dough not cooked enough, the bacon rinds still left on the egg-and-bacon sandwich, and the pumpkin soup not really being stand out (compared to the Green Team’s). So, I’m not really sure how they arrived at the decision that the Blues should win based on taste?!
