MasterChef Australia Season Four – Yet Another MasterClass

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Ben Vs. Emma in Top 16 Elimination

It’s a French affair in tonight’s MasterClass, so what will we learn tonight?

After a brief introduction and debrief, it’s time for our first lesson.

Lesson 1: French Onion Soup

This is a good way to discuss how to correctly cut up onions without crying, with humorous responses. Beau, Mindy and Tregan are asked to come up to chop onions with three different anti-crying methods. None of them worked! Anyway, onto the dish, and it is quite simple. George helps Gary out on this one with the croutons. Beau, Tregan and Mindy are asked to taste the final product.

Lesson 2: Roast Spatchcock and Vegetables

They learn how to ‘spatchcock’ which is basically cutting up the chicken in a certain way. It’s George’s dish, but Gary helps prepare. They also show them how to roll the ‘chicken legs’ and vacuum them before cooking them. George then goes into preparing his vegetables in his weird little way. He makes a pomme galette as well, which looks like burnt pineapple. They also wrap some of the chicken leg in gold! What even?!

Andrew and Mindy get to taste.

Lesson 3: Pain Perdu with Citrus Salad and Honey Ice Cream

To show you this dessert, Philippe Mouchel enters as special guest chef! Julia is the only person who has attempted this in this competition- and she didn’t do well. This dessert looks very rich. He shows them a good dark caramel technique. Kylie is asked to come up and help with some elements, as is Julia. It looks beautiful.

The episode ends with a quick little feast as always!

MasterChef Australia next airs Jun 24 at 7.30PM on TEN.

OMG – just watched this episode. Who in this economy – or any – could afford that much truffle and gold leaf? I find it hard to even afford it’s sponsers – Nandos chicken. Get real Ten.

Yes, it certainly looked complex, although Vark (gold leaf) can be acquired quite cheaply in some places. I think the main point of education in that lesson was the plating and the actual cooking techniques rather than the decorating.

Although the use of Vark on a main course is an odd choice- it’s usually saved for desserts!
