MasterChef Australia: All Stars – Sausage Sizzle Challenge

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia: All Stars – Four Cuisine Challenge

Really, MasterChef? A Sausage Sizzle challenge? Looks like it’s gonna be easier said than done.

So it’s the first ‘team challenge’ for the day, despite the fact they’ve been competing in teams for the entire duration of this season so far. It will be their first off site challenge.

A fire truck is standing by to take them somewhere! Only the captains will get to ride in the fire truck. The others will follow by car. As usual, Callum, Kate and Julie are the captains of their teams. They head to the State Training Centre College for firemen.

Challenge Brief: Today, they will be cooking for the firemen and women. Behind the judges are some ingredients and stalls. They will be cooking a sausage sizzle…the best in the world. Everything they make must be able to be eaten by hand. They must create their own condiment to complement their sausage sizzle. The firemen and women will be judging them today. The winners will get an advantage for tomorrow. There is also another twist- they must make sausages out of different proteins. Each team can only choose one for their team. They can choose from duck, lamb, beef or pork. To decide, the leaders must randomly pick a fire extinguisher to determine the picking order. In order of pick, here is what each leader got:

Callum: Duck

Julie: Pork

Kate: Lamb

Conditions: They have until midday to impress the firemen and women.

Progress: So they have until midday, which means they have three hours. Despite the simplicity the challenge seems to offer, it looks quite tough as there is a lot to do in 3 hours. They all begin straight away on the mincing.

Team 2010 are doing chutney to go with their sausages and the judges seem impressed. Team 2009 are doing a tomato relish. Over on team 2011, they will be caramelising onions. Contestants soon start on their test batches for their protein to make sure they get their sausages right. Team 2011 don’t like their first taste test.

Meanwhile, there are fire demonstrations occurring around them, distracting some contestants. They have to stay alert if they want to finish on time. With an hour to go, it seems everyone is onto their snag creating and wrapping.

So, team 2009 decide to poach their sausages before barbecuing them in an attempt to firm them up. Team 2011 find that this dries them out. Team 2010’s sausages are bursting open. Hmm, three different scenarios. Exciting.

They all seem quite organised with Team 2011 probably the furthest ahead. The red team are still mincing sausages as their sausages continue to explode.

Soon, SOOOOOO many fire fighters arrive and here comes the stress. Team 2010’s complacency is really hurting them now.

Early indications are that the blue team’s sausages are a bit dry, but their relish is a hit. Team 2011’s onion and herbs are a hit, as are the sausages themselves. Seems they’re onto a winner here.

Team 2010’s sausages are a bit grainy, but the relish is a hit.

When Team 2011’s stall runs out of sausages, they go to help other teams. Soon, time is up.

Result: It was VERY close today. Eight votes separated the three teams. Team 2009 got 28 votes. They came third. 36 votes went to Team 2010 AND Team 2011, meaning a tie for both teams. The judges decide that Team 2010 are the top dogs today.

MasterChef: All Stars next airs Jul 31 at 7PM on TEN.

Haven’t had the stomach to tune in to all stars,so thanx for recaps ;-) TEN really should’ve rested this format, and the re-hash of characters who we no longer have any interest in. How true to form Mrs G is! She got through that first series, being the weakest & not being seen a threat by her fellow competitors, who were voting each other off, remember? Marketing to a largely obese audience meant she was the logical winner, from the sponsors viewpoint.
I think bringing this lot back,so soon, may have jeopardised ratings for next series?

I doubt it. At only three weeks in length, I think it will have very little to do with next years ratings. And I love the idea of a small All-Stars format; I don’t think we’ve lost interest in these characters at all; and it is a good alternative to the olympics if people so desire one.

A bit harsh, perhaps? I’ve quite enjoyed seeing the All-Stars and at only three weeks I think it won’t outstay its welcome. I don’t think it will harm the show’s prospects for next year at all.
