Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Adriano Zumbo Mega Challenge
I’m calling this the catch 22 elimination. This is because the contestants will be cooking for a loved one. Last year, this challenge was simply a filler/ non-event whereas by the end of this year’s family challenge- someone will go home.
Challenge Brief: The contestants aren’t in the kitchen long before they hear that today; they’re cooking for loved ones. They have to cook the meals their family members have missed. They need to show how worthwhile being on MasterChef has been. Furthermore, it is the family members who will decide what the contestants will be cooking. Here’s what they chose:
Andy: Lamb and vegetables with pine nut mousse.
Julia: Lemon Syrup cake with ice cream.
Mindy: Some Thai dish.
Alice: Spiced Lamb Roast
Conditions: 90 Minutes cooking time.
Progress: Their loved ones are allowed to help. Today, Andy is visited by his mother; Alice and Julia their partners; Ben his brother; Kylie her sister; Mindy her dad and Audra her kids and husband. Mindy is going to do some duck dish while Andy is doing a potato galette. Alice is doing two textures of lamb for her partner! She’s worried about her place in the competition.
Julia keeps going on about how they never usually eat Lemon Syrup cake with ice cream. THE MAN WANTS ICE CREAM DAMN IT! They all don’t like how this could be their last chance to cook in the MasterChef kitchen. Audra’s son makes a quip about boys being better cooks than girls. Ask two of MasterChef’s three winners that!
With an hour to go, Alice needs to get her shanks into the oven but with so much to do, her head is just swimming! Meanwhile, Andy seems to make a booboo with his galettes, so George gives him some advice. 45 minutes remain.
Alice gets her lamb shanks into the pressure cooker, but it’s too late. The judges give her some advice and she takes it, to their surprise. With ten minutes to go, Andy is still nervous something will go horribly wrong.
When plating begins, Alice finds she has to discard some of her lamb shanks and Andy almost gets rid of a perfectly good galette.
Soon, time is up, and it is time to taste! The family member for each contestant will act as the fourth judge.
Tasting & Results
Andy
Cooking: Roast Lamb Rack with Potato Galette and Mushroom Mousse.
Comments: His mother likes the dish but the judges would have liked a bit more greenery. His mother calls it perfect. They love the galette and George likes the taste of the lamb.
Mindy
Cooking: Crispy Skin Duck with Red Curry & Lychee Sauce.
Comments: Her dad loves the curry and Gary would eat the bones if he could. George loves the rice. Matt would questions the use of the duck leg as the type of meat.
Julia
Cooking: Lemon Syrup Cake with Lemon Curd Ice Cream.
Comments: The judges love the moistness of the cake. They love the lemon syrup and Gary likes the ice cream the most. They would have liked a dish that further showed development.
Alice
Cooking: Spiced Lamb Fillet.
Comments: The judges aren’t so sure on how the lamb has been cooked. Her partner loves the spices and says it reminds him of a lamb roast. George loves it but Matt doesn’t like the braise so much.
Results: Mindy is safe first. Andy is saved second. The person leaving MasterChef Australia in seventh place is… Alice!
MasterChef Australia next airs Jul 20 at 7PM on TEN.
