Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Kangaroo Island MasterClass
Is that Heston Blumenthal I see returning? Or is it just a delicious, fifteen-layered chocolate cake created by Heston Blumenthal that has just been moulded into the shape of Heston Blumenthal? Explosion of le mind here on MasterChef tonight!
The contestants rocked up relaxed and happy, hoping for an average Mystery Box. Obviously not guys! First up, contestants find out three people will leave this week!
Challenge Brief: It’s an invention test…set by Heston Blumenthal. To begin with, there are twelve cloches with six matching ingredients lying under them. They have been picked by Heston. They will choose one pair and cook with them. They will know one ingredient, but not the other.
The ingredients are bacon (picked by Mindy), Vegemite (picked by Wade, Jules and Julia), cauliflower (picked by Beau, Ben and Andy), beetroot (picked by Audra, Debra and Alice), caviar (picked by Amina) and blue cheese (picked by Kylie and Andrew).
Here’s the pairing:
Bacon & Chocolate
Vegemite & Chocolate
…and everything else & Chocolate!
The best dish of the day wins their maker a chance in immunity. The bottom three will go into elimination.
Conditions: 90 Minutes cooking time. Free range in the pantry.
Progress: Amina is quite shocked at what she has to cook with. She has chosen to work with white chocolate. She is surprised at how well chocolate works with caviar. Kylie on the other hand is more than happy. She’s doing a chocolate-cherry ice-cream which seems very delicate and complex. Beau is making stuff, like sorbet, that I couldn’t see him making in a million years!
Everyone seems to have fun. For a Heston challenge, not much is going wrong. Julia is making macarons with vegemite Ganache, which sounds so odd. Jules is doing a white chocolate mousse with vegemite and citrus caramel. Hmm. Matt calls it a winner!
With fifteen minutes to go, the dry ice is steaming and the pots are cooking! Julia decides to complicate their macarons a bit more, which could be either a bad or good thing. Beau is also adding extra flavour here and there. Wade, who is doing tarts, burns them. Amina is also having presentation issues.
Soon, time is up, and Amina looks disappointed.
Tasting & Results
Wade
Cooking: Chocolate & Hazelnut Tart with Vegemite pastry.
Comments: Matt calls it ‘good weird’ and says it works for many reasons. He notices the burn. Heston says he’s done a good job.
Julia
Cooking: Vegemite & White Chocolate Macarons.
Comments: George calls the macarons inspired and familiar. They like the raspberry hit in the middle.
Beau
Cooking: Deep Fried Cauliflower with chocolate sauce.
Comments: Matt says the sorbet is nice, but is the standout because surprisingly everything else leaves him cold.
Mindy
Cooking: Chocolate Coated Bacon
Comments: Gary loves the look of it but says there’s something wrong with the bacon/chocolate thing.
Alice
Cooking: White Chocolate Ice Cream with Beetroot Jelly
Comments: Heston says the dish makes him dizzy, which makes him enjoy it.
Debra
Cooking: Chocolate & Beetroot Cake
Comments: Heston says the dish has nice balance.
Jules
Cooking: White Chocolate Mousse with Vegemite & Citrus Caramel.
Comments: Heston loves the caramel and says it works with the crumble. More acidity would be better. He calls it rich. Matt says it looks familiar but says the caramel was wonderful and works with the other flavours. Matt likes her dessert more than Julia’s.
Amina
Cooking: Caviar & Chocolate Mousse.
Comments: Gary likes her idea, but says the texture is off.
Andrew
Cooking: Chocolate & Blue Cheese Sponge with Blue Cheese Ice-cream.
Comments: George says the blue cheese and the milk chocolate doesn’t work. He also thinks the blue cheese sponge should have a bigger punch. Heston calls it ambitious.
Kylie
Cooking: Blue Cheese & Honey Sundae
Comments: Heston calls it a good example of a dish that can bring two obscure elements together. George calls it legendary.
Result: The winning dishes belonged to…Kylie, Julia and Jules. The person to compete in immunity on Tuesday will be…Kylie.
The three contestants heading into tomorrow’s elimination will be…Andrew, Amina and Beau.
So there we go! Not the most inspiring of Heston’s challenge, but still a challenge with both good results and cringy mistakes.
MasterChef Australia next airs Jul 2 at 7PM on TEN.
