MasterChef Australia Season Four – Pizza & Pasta Italian Week Challenge

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia Season Four – Italy Week Begins

Tonight, we turn to the stereotypical Italian favourites as four contestants battle it out for a place in tomorrow’s immunity challenge!

We’re still in Rome for today’s challenge as Wade, Alice, Julia and Mindy get ready to take on the day.

Challenge Brief: We’re at Campo Fiori for the challenge announcement. Today, we’re looking for a top two for tomorrow. Today’s challenge will encompass pizza and pasta- they will all have to cook it. Again, they have to collect their own ingredients and cook up their dishes in the Mercato Restaurant. They will be cooking their meals for 120 guests! It’s the lunch service! They must think of a dish and chalk it down quick because no two people can do the same pizza or pasta. The challenge will come down to the tasting by the judges and how many people can be pleased.

The rest of the contestants will be running front of house today while Audra and Ben are doing dishes!

Progress: The contestants begin and Alice gets some help from a passer buyer who happened to be a chef assistant. Contestants are heading to many different shops to source ingredients. Here are what the contestants will be making.

Julia

Pizza: Bresaola, rocket and pecorino.

Pasta: Rigatoni

Wade

Pizza: Pizza Napoletana

Pasta: Carbonara

Alice

Pizza: Pizza Quattro Formaggi

Pasta: Orecchiette

Mindy

Pizza: Pizza Bianco

Pasta: Casarecce

They then grab the rest of their ingredients and head to the small-sized kitchen. It’s hard for all the contestants to move in the small space. The dough also provides problems in the way of time. After the break, George offers help in the form of a man named Gino, and his own assistance during service, which begins in 30 minutes!

George isn’t happy with the speed of cooking. He has to step in to give in some help at one point. He is actually getting quite angry as problems are encountered left right and centre. Wade is falling so far behind that Mindy has to step in to help.

Soon, orders begin to come in and front of house becomes crowded with dockets and instructions. Alice’s pasta and pizzas are becoming popular and she seems to be the most stressed. Wade however has forgotten to make pizza sauce and George lets him use Julia’s. George is now going off on Alice who isn’t keeping up!

All of a sudden, Julia needs more sauce for her ten pizzas because Wade has taken some of the sauce. It’s stuffed her up, but she’s nice about it! All of a sudden, Gary comes upstairs to alert them of the amount of orders still to come.

It’s time for the judges to judge and Gary feels horrible for them.

Orecchiette (Alice): Gary says it looks nice and Matt loves the combination of flavours. Matt thinks there should be more. Gary says there’s nothing tying the dish together.

Spaghetti Carbonara (Wade): Matt loves the colour of the pasta and the amount of bacon. Gary says it is a bit stodgy but says it is the only criticism.

Casarecce (Mindy): Matt thinks it needs cheese. Gary likes the simplicity. They are pleasantly surprised by the taste of the sauce.

Rigatoni (Julia): Matt isn’t too impressed with the broken pasta. Matt says the pasta isn’t cooked properly.

Pizza Bianco (Mindy): Matt loves the balsamic and rocket on the pizza with the prosciutto however he calls the pizza salty.

Pizza Bresaola (Julia): They call the base biscuit-y but they love the toppings.

Pizza Quattro Formaggi (Alice): They give the pizza a thumbs up.

Bad news is, they don’t taste Wade’s pizza; good news- service is finished!

Result: The two contestants heading into immunity tomorrow are Alice & Mindy.

MasterChef Australia next airs Jul 10 at 7PM on TEN.

George said it was worst day in his life, while trying to help the four contestants in the kitchen (and got a cut finger in the process). I have to agree with him, it was worse than the chaotic situation he faced in season 2 in early 2010, when the contestants were working in his Press Club restaurant in Melbourne, which was re-opening with new renovations and menu.
