Over four days after it aired, I ended up watching The Shire – which premiered on Ten last Monday night (July 16).
My interest in the show was mostly due to the fact I know the area well, after having many people I know in my life now and in the past living in the Sutherland Shire. At school, many of my friends were from the shire, when I DJed in the 90′s, many of the people I met were also from there. I even DJed at Miranda RSL on a few occasions – deep in the middle of the Shire. Friends of mine worked at other clubs in Caringbah and Cronulla, while my employer and his wife – my immediate manager (of my day job, not Throng!) are all from … The Shire. Growing up, half way between Hurstville and Bankstown, Cronulla Beach was my closest beach which I have been to many times.
Overall, I didn’t mind watching The Shire – its all a bunch of 20-somethings living their life, having fun. But I have to say, Vernesa and Sophie – you should now all know the ones – the super boob implants, botox, lips that are so big, they are stupid to the point where these girls look like avatars – really killed the show for me. If you remove all the parts these two are in, The Shire really isn’t that bad.
After all, the majority of the negative commentary about The Shire is as a result of the way Vernesa and Sophie carry on. These two say they want everyone in The Hire to look as beautiful as them – really? Those two girls are NOT in the least beautiful at all. Anyone who thinks that having lips bigger than their arms and fake boobs that look like basket balls is beautiful is as equally as deranged as these two are.
Then there is Beckaa – with the double “a”. I have to say I agree with everything I have read about the fact that her relationship with her father is weird to say the least – no wonder some questioned if her father was her “sugar Daddy”.
Vernesa, Sophie and Beckaa aside, the show reminds me a little bit of Slide which aired on FOX8 last year – young people partying and having fun.
Nationally, 941,000 watched The Shire (final adjusted figure), and it made the nightly news. Seven News even went as far as to say more were watching Seven and ABC than The Shire. Well – no. The Amazing Race Australia (aired at the same time) was watched by an average of 913,000 – less than The Shire, while Australian Story on ABC1 was indeed watched by more people.
The Shire was the 3rd most watched show in Sydney – as we should expect – but didn’t fare so well in other cities. It did very well in the younger demographics – killing it in 16-39′s. The Shire is the second most watched show on Ten this week, after Masterchef.
The Shire airs on Ten Mondays 8pm, and soon to be on another night as well (embargoed).
