Hey Dad! television star Robert Hughes, wanted for sex offences against a number of girls 20 years ago, has been arrested in London. The 63-year-old was taken into custody following a two year investigation by the NSW Police Force’s Sex Crimes Squad.
Sarah Monahan Morris, who played “Jenny” on on the hit TV show tweeted: “I am literally crying with happiness right now”.
In March 2010 Sarah Monahan alleged that Hughes had engaged in inappropriate sexual behaviour on the set of the Hey Dad..! show. Ben Oxenbould and Simone Buchanan commented in support of her allegations. Police announced the creation of a strike force on 29 March to investigate the claims. Monahan said she spent more than 35 hours testifying to police.
In September 2010, six months after the allegations were published, it was reported that over a hundred people had been interviewed.
Its alleged Hughes sexually assaulted five girls between 1985 and 1990 in a number of northern Sydney suburbs.
In May this year, detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant in relation to 11 offences, including indecent assault and sexual assault.
Detectives attached to Strike Force Ruskin, set up to investigate the allegations, conducted extensive international inquiries to locate Hughes including working with the London Metropolitan Police.
Hughes was arrested about 7am by London metropolitan Police (4pm AEST) and taken to Belgravia Police Station.
