Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia: All Stars – Another Double Cull
After a week of brutal eliminations; it seems so fitting to end the week on a nice cake baking challenge courtesy of the CWA!
The contestants seem to be catching on to the fact this will be a CWA challenge. They head to the kitchen to find out.
Challenge Brief: Yep; it’s a CWA challenge. They’ll be cooking cakes! They will be cooking fruitcake, citrus sour cream cake, passionfruit cake, Madeira cake, Chocolate honey sponge roll (they will have to make two of these), lumberjack cake, lamingtons and the Neapolitan cake. Luckily, they won’t have to ALL cook ALL of them- they will be cooking one each. Judging will be conducted by three CWA members- Merle Parrish, Alison Mutton Nelleke Gorton.
You may remember Merle from last year. She’s still winning her immunity pin.
So, here’s who cooks what cake; chosen by drawing whisks at random.
Poh: Passionfruit Cake
Chris: Citrus Sour Cream Cake
Justine: Lumberjack
Julie: Neapolitan
Marion: Chocolate Honey Sponge Roll
Callum: Boiled Fruitcake
Dani: Madeira
Kate: Lamington
Conditions: 100 minutes cooking time. Recipe and ingredients.
Progress: And here we go- another infamous CWA challenge on its way. Kate seems happy with this challenge; but Callum is already planning all his time out. A good sign of stress. Marion is also quite panicky about this challenge. Julie’s tendency to shake may also prove a problem when it comes to icing her cake properly.
Callum finds out that his cake mixture is perfect; but his tin lining has too many creases in it. He has an hour to go.
But; back to disaster-town; and Poh has forgotten to put her egg whites into her cake mixture. Uh oh! She fixes it; but is now fighting for time.
Marion begins to wrap her roll; but without spraying the tea-towel; the cake sticks to the tea-towel. It’s ruined. 45 minutes to go. Lucky she has a spare. Meanwhile, Callum has his cake in the oven, and he may have too much mixture to cook in time.
Julie takes her cake out and she is happy with her efforts so far. Meanwhile, Poh’s cake cracks and she still isn’t convinced her cake is cooked.
Marion’s second roll of a cake is again a disaster. Meanwhile, Kate is working well with her lamingtons with some helpful advice from Merle. Julie’s icing is a bit shaky and time is running out. Soon; there’s nothing more they can do.
Tasting & Results
The cake each contestant cooks is listed above.
Kate: Merle likes the look of them. They love the taste of the lamingtons, with Alison calling them excellent.
Marion: The cracks are taken into consideration. Marion does get the rolling correct, but there’s a bit of a gap in the cake. They love the taste; they call the cake balanced.
Chris: The look of the cake is praised for its even colour and they love the beautiful flavour.
Justine: Her topping is nicely presented.
Dani: There’s a slight bowing across the top.
Poh: They like the look of the icing and Alison says the cake looks good. But; has she cooked it enough? Yep; it has- it has finished off beautifully. They love the taste as well.
Callum: They know by the shape of the cake it won’t be cooked in the middle; however they like the rest of the cake.
Julie: Her cake shape is spot on and her presentation is excellent. It’s cooked well in the middle and her layers are easy to identify.
Results: The top three are… Poh, Julie and Kate. Third place goes to Kate. The winner of the challenge, and of the $5,000 for their charity, is… Julie!
MasterChef: All Stars next airs Aug 12 at 7PM on TEN.
