Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia: All Stars – Top Chef Immunity Challenge
Tonight; all but Kate, Dani and Justine face the first elimination…and not one, but two of them will fail to make the next round. Who will be going home?
The nine contestants competing tonight, and the three who aren’t, enter the kitchen where Gary and George await them.
Pressure Test Brief: Today’s pressure test is a special one…because one of them has cooked it before. Is that fair for an elimination? Not sure. They will be cooking Gary’s beef wellington. In fact, it was Jonathan who cooked it in the top fifty.
Conditions: 2 hours, fifteen minutes cooking time.
Progress: Marion made this in four hours at home; so she has to put the pedal to the metal here. The judges predict Julie and Poh to struggle at this. Meanwhile, while Aaron is caramelising his meat; the contestants on the balcony don’t seem convinced he’s doing it right. Also; his crepes aren’t going to plan, making the judges nervous. Kumar also struggles to make the pastry.
They are all nervous, because this is an all-stars elimination. Aaron struggles to wrap his beef in prosciutto. Kumar is moving too slow and risks not chilling the pastry long enough. And now for the funniest moment in MasterChef history- Kumar saying ‘shit’.
The contestants, most of them, are now putting their wellingtons in the oven. Poh is behind and she begins to panic. There’s only 35 minutes remaining. She won’t be able to put it in the freezer and hopes it cooks properly. Kumar is also behind; however with the help of Jonathan, he gets it done. The best thing about having your wellington in the oven; they don’t have to do much. Oh, Aaron also hasn’t got his wellington in. Chris comes to help.
Most contestants work on their sauces. Julie is doing a red wine sauce. Poh’s doing something really authentic.
Soon, time is up; and despite the fears; they all do manage to plate something.
Tasting & Results
Jonathan: It’s cooked well. George tells Jonathan that his wellington is brilliant and his red wine sauce is good as well. Gary calls the dish smashing.
Kumar: George finds some faults with the presentation. The pastry is loose from the meat, but overall, they like the quality of the meat. Gary doesn’t like the salty sauce.
Hayden: Gary calls the cooking of the meat ‘spot on’. They don’t like the lack of mushrooms.
Julie: They like the look of the meat. They also like the taste.
Callum: Again; great presentation. George loves the pastry and the mushrooms.
Marion: George calls the wellington ‘sensational’.
Aaron: His meat is cooked well but the higher cooking temperature he used has not allowed for some of the pastry to cook. George is disappointed in the lack of caramelised mushrooms. Gary criticises him for not packing it in enough. George calls it a good job nonetheless.
Chris: Gary thinks he may have used too much egg glaze on one side of the wellington. They like the wellington, but not the sauce.
Poh: The meat looks a little pale. They love the sauce. A big shame is that the pastry on the underside has not been cooked properly.
Result: The contestants going home today are… Kumar and Aaron.
NOOO! THAT’S RIDICULOUS! Kumar has a salty sauce- eliminated. Poh has pale meat; undercooked pastry- stays. Kumar had slight problems with presentation- but this is so unfair! We’ll miss you, Kumar! And Aaron- another shock! He didn’t even get to raise money for his charity. Luckily MasterChef have a spare $5,000 for his charity. But unfortunately, today was not his day. I guess all eliminations in this series will be shocking.
MasterChef: All Stars next airs Aug 7 at 7PM on TEN.
