MasterChef Australia: All Stars – The Nightmare Dish

Previous Episode: MasterChef Australia: All Stars – Favourite Challenges Return

What stands between team 2009 and $10,000 for their charity? The one dish they DON’T want to make (no, not the risotto)!

All the contestants enter the kitchen, but as the winners of yesterday’s challenge, only Team 2009 will compete for $10,000 today. They will be competing as individuals.

Challenge Brief: Today, they will be fighting for redemption. They have to create a good version of a dish they have previously struggled at. They all have to draw from their own set of knives, containing three knives each. Each knife has engraved on it a dish they didn’t do so well at. Here is what they have to cook.

Justine: Pear Tart (funnily enough, she made this during an immunity challenge with now-semi-host Matt Moran)

Poh: Chocolate Tart (the finale dish that determined Julie the winner over Poh)

Julie: Puddle Pie

Chris: Vanilla Panna Cotta

Conditions: Chris and Poh have 2.5 hours to cook their dish. Julie and Justine will have an hour and a half. The ingredients they need are provided.

Progress: Poh and Chris begin and they don’t seem too happy to have to recreate their dishes. However, Poh is smiling, so I guess that’s something. Poh almost pushes her tart of the table and Chris is not so sure about his almond mixture as he feels it is a bit thick. Poh also has to make some almond meal and decides against blending it. Will it work out OK?

An hour is almost up and Chris begins to pipe his macarons, but they’re too thick. He has to blend them again before re-piping them. Chris is adamant he won’t be starting again. Poh begins piping her macarons and while they are a little stiff, she seems happy with them.

Chris finishes with his second batch of macarons and while he isn’t happy, he has to continue. At this moment, Julie and Justine begin their cooking time. Julie is determined not to have a replica puddle pie to last time!

A problem Justine had the last time she did this was that she didn’t prepare enough pears- preparing one instead of four. This is what the recipe said for her to do. Funnily enough, she almost makes the same mistake!

Meanwhile, Chris pulls his macarons out and he is not happy with them at all. He can only hope the others make mistakes. Poh’s macarons look a bit odd as well. Meanwhile, Julie is having fun making mess.

Poh reaches the daunting part of her recipe, tempering the chocolate. She’s not having initial success here either. There’s half an hour to go. She begins to get somewhere with the help of some Team 2010 members. She hits a hurdle when her test chocolate doesn’t work. She is annoyed that she listened to other people rather than read instructions. She puts the chocolate in the fridge; the same thing she did last time.

Justine seems overwhelmed with her recipe, but I think she is just paranoid she will forget to do something- with good reason! Meanwhile, Chris finishes his Panna Cotta part of the dish and he is so happy with it. Plating up the macarons, he thinks he will be OK.

All of a sudden, Julie seems to lose it! She laughs chaotically. With ten minutes to go, she has so much to do. Poh for some reason wants to do more chocolate tempering!!

Julie manages to get her pastry on the plate carefully and perfectly. Justine’s tart is looking wonderful but she cuts her finger and struggles to plate it. Chris helps her.

Time is up and everyone seems to do quite well. Poh is annoyed that she was not able to redeem her chocolate tempering skills.

Tasting & Results

The dish for each contestant is mentioned above.

Poh: The judges let her put her chocolate pipe on the plate to see how it would look. They also get a crack out of it. To the tasting and George says the tart and sorbet are perfect.

Justine: Gary loves the look of it and the taste.

Chris: George loves the creaminess of the panna cotta and calls it delicious and even thinks the macarons are nice.

Julie: The cutting of her pie goes sensationally well and it looks perfect. They think she has recovered herself completely.

Result: What a positive challenge, but only one can win. The winner of the $10,000 for their charity is… Julie!

Didn’t look like she was going to do it for a second there, but a deserving winner! Onya, Jules! But, speaking of deservedness, Julie decides to split the prize with Poh! Wonderful!

MasterChef: All Stars next airs Aug 5 at 7PM on TEN.

After The Sunday Telegraph reported last weekend that MasterChef could move to Melbourne for the 2013 season, its sister paper Herald Sun said today that the Centennial Hall at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds could be a possible location for the show, with production to start at the end of the year. MasterChef is one of few reality shows that don’t give away the filming location (the others I can think of are Beauty and the Geek Australia and My Kitchen Rules, although I know MKR is filmed in Fox Studios in Sydney). Only dedicated fans know that MC is filmed in a two-storey building on a street located in the industrial suburb of Alexandria in southern Sydney, although the program shows so many times the contestants’ house is on the left side of Double Bay. The producers chose the location for the MC kitchen because it gave a sense of security and privacy. Can you imagine the security problem it will generate if such a prominent location like the Showgrounds is chosen for the show?
After the Herald Sun’s revelation, The acting NSW opposition leader Linda Burney MP has demanded the State Government move to ensure MasterChef staying in Sydney, as the show generates as many as 360 jobs in television production and flow-on industries, and showcases the restaurants and chefs of Sydney to millions of viewers around Australia and the world. For the record, MasterChef has never received NSW government funding or assistance since production began in 2009, so why should the show need them in 2013?
