I Will Survive Has the X Factor - Actually better talent and more!

“I Will Survive” to me has been one of the best shows of the year – probably the best on free to air. Why = you will ask when it rates below 300,000? I ask why is X Factor getting above 1.6 million with less talent?

There is TRUE talent there on Network Ten . Why the public has not embraced it is beyond me. The talent of Davin Griffith Jones, Tom Sharah and others is incomparable. Is Australia getting into a rut on TV?

I truly believe that IWS (I Will Survive) was a unique and credible venture by Ten, that, if I was a program director, I would have embraced. Seeing the amazing talent and vocal skills of the men on this show, demonstrate the lack of skill on mass audience shows like The X Factor, The Voice, Idol and the like.

IWS has so many new talents yet also people experiencing the field such as Nathan Foley, when I started watching the show I could only see him as Nathan from Hi-5. I now want to see hom as a performer in concert as himself and he has shaken of the Hi-5 image. Tom, to me, is as Kelly Roland said, a STAR, as are most of the talent on this show.

How do we compare this to the X Factor which beats it in ratings by 1.4 million? X Factor is for mainstream people and I do not see a quarter of the talent I am experiencing on IWS.

So how is Australia judging talent? Can we only chose tweeted and Facebooked people that don’t know the quality of show tunes and love and embrace the quality of a voice that can move you to tears? I am so sad that this show has not worked. I am not paid by Ten, but this my true opinion. Each week I look forward to writing about this show nd am very sorry for anyone who recognises talent and has to suffer the reality of The X Factor due to peer pressure over the talent that is shown on IWS.

I am watching the last performance again – whch I have seen three times – and yes – Tom deserved to be safe – but I think they all should have been! OK – I am a IWS whore – but look at the alternative.

I agree this show deserved a better following. The public are fickle. I think Ten chose the wrong time slot but that’s just my opinion.

I like this show alot and its a real shame it didn’t work out. I’m not sure why either? I mean what’s not to love, celebrities judging, outback Australia and Australian talent. I think if X Factor wasn’t on, it might have had more ratings, they should have put it on earlier in the year.

I disagree people are being peer pressured into ‘watching’ X Factor because of its social media influence. People first have to watch the show before taking to Facebook and Twitter to comment on it- so I feel the people watching the show are genuinely interested in it.
The talent on both shows are great and this is why I love shows like this as it gives people the chance to show their worth. The thing with talent though is it can be divisive. What some may consider talent, others may not. It’s more complicated on television. It’s not just the talent the viewers consider when choosing a show. There are so many talent shows around, they have a large range of choice. From what channel it airs on to who stars on it to how it’s packaged all count.
The X Factor is probably doing so well because it is on a popular channel that has invested a lot into making it glossy and attractive. It’s the same argument I gave when discussing the amount of people watching the HD coverage of the Olympics. I argued there would be no way GEM’s HD coverage would have enough pulling power to actually outrate Nine’s SD coverage due to habit. People simply can’t be bothered changing the channel and stick with convention.
So this is not a reflection on how talented I Will Survive contestants are. It’s more of a reflection on what the viewer can be bothered to watch. I Will survive would need huge pulling power to bring in viewers (a specific audience doesn’t help) and would require X Factor to be void of talent.
That isn’t the case, and the talent on both shows are strong. It’s just a case of people not breaking convention and trying new material.

I’m still enjoyed I Will Survive, even more so now that they have edited the double episodes into a single episode each week.
I certainly don’t miss the “bus tours” of each town or the weekly “engage in a stereotypically masculine activity” challenges. It is a shame that Davin was eliminated so early as he was the most … interesting of the contestants. Tom is clearly the most charismatic of the remaining contestants and I hope they keep him around for a while longer as the show would be dull without him. None of the others seem to enjoy talking to the camera or perhaps just have nothing interesting, bitchy or witty to say.
