If you’re one of the 90,000 or so watching The Block NZ, and also one of the many who have also watched any of the Come Dine With Me franchise (there are a few now!) – so probably a handful of people – then you would have seen how The Block NZ did their own version of Come Dine With Me for the one and only week 3 challenge.
In week 3, the four Kiwi couples have to renovate both their bathroom and laundry. In the most recent Australian series, bathroom week also included a second smaller room – the toilet under the stairs.
True to usual Block form, the block-heads received an SMS from the host – bringing the couples away from their renovations and out into the yard for a meeting. Here, it was announced there would be a twist this week (as there always is on this show – the term is getting a little over-used).
They were told there would only be one challenge for week 3.
But – the catch is, it goes over four nights. Each of the couples have to prepare a dinner party for the other three couples – who will then give the host couple a score out of 10. The couples have to prepare food, decorate and theme their “dinner parties” – quite a task considering the dining rooms in their homes are nothing more than frames of rooms at the moment.
This is exactly the same format as Come Dine With Me. The Come Dine With Me similarities go so far as having the guest couples wandering around or “snooping” around the hosts’ house.
On Tuesday nights’ episode (Sept 4) we saw two couples host dinner parties over two nights. The couples scoring put their scores into a large pot - reminds me of Survivor tribal council.
The first couple were judged fairly by the other three teams with scores ranging from 6.5 – 7.5 out of 10. BUT – in a move that will make them the most hated couple on The Block NZ - Richard and Sarah score the second dinner a 1 – they hosted the first and scored well.
They say they need to vote strategically to win the challenge. Now I hope they don’t.
After all – winning the challenges is how they all get some much needed extra cash to go towards their renovations.
The backlash from the strategic vote of 1/10 will be seen on Thursday nights episode – Thur Sept 6, 8.30pm on GO!
The Block NZ airs on GO! Tuesdays 7.30pm and Thursdays 8.30pm.
Various versions of Come Dine With Me air on Foxtel, on Lifestyle Food. There was also Come Dine With Me Greece on SBS TWO for a while several months ago.
By the way, if you are a fan of The Block NZ, and want to avoid finding out the winner, then avoid Throng’s NZ site for a few days – as the live auction for this series of The Block NZ will be live blogged there on the night of Thur Sept 6 NZ time.
