Stephen Mahy Exit interview - Where is the justice?

Here is my interview with tonight’s “I Will Survive” eliminated contestant, Stephen Mahy. The extremely talented performer that appeared in Australia’s production of Jersey Boys lead role and is a WAAPA elumni was an honour to talk too and someone we will see on Broadway soon – if there is justice in the world.

Do you think you deserved to be eliminated tonight?
I didn’t think I was the weakest this week. Due to ratings I sometimes wonder if it was a voting show – who would have made it?

Do you regret your song choice of Amy Winehouses “Rehab”?
Not at all! We had the list and I chose it and it’s an awesome song. I did it in a different way that was dirty and ugly – and that’s what the judges said they wanted. I’m not a pop singer and wanted to emote feelings and emotion and proove am not just a musical theatre performer.

Did you have to go home straight away?
I got a day to see agents but they all wanted a Green Card. I am now in the process of getting one. Have made contacts and my Aussie manager is great.

Who was your favourite judge, Stephan or Jason?
Jason was, but on watching he comes across different, maybe I didn’t hear everything he said. People have since said he had it in for me and I see that, but didn’t feel it. Stephan was aloof but funny.

I always disagree with the judges and felt that Jason praised you, yet you were bottom 2!
The judges contradicted themselves. I didn’t take it personally – I don’t think they understood that some of us are professionals in our field.

Who was your favourite guest judge?
Asher Keddie definately, she was very giving. I loved Toni Collette and was great to talk to and love her in United States of Tara.

Was there anyone you really bonded with on the show?
Yes – Matt was a gentleman and I knew him before the show, but we really bonded more. Rohan always stayed true to himself and even if in a bad mood or tired, he was always the lovely Rohan.

Are you being recognised everywhere?
Yes, it’s weird. I go to the shops and people think they know me, yet not necisarily recognise me. I understand because I have been giddy when I have met Rodger Corser (Rush).

What was your best experience on the show?
I loved going to Hermannsburg and singing with Rachel. She thought this was the biggest thing that happend to her and I was worried about my eyelashes in the outback. Seeing the difference between us was amazing – she showed and taught me alot. Also there was no bitching on the bus and it was just pure comradarie.

What’s next?
I have a guest role in the new show “Mr and Mrs Murder” on Ten with Shaun Micallef. I also do cabaret shows and want to get into TV more (I’d watch!)

What are your favourite three TV shows?
Mad Men, Homeland and Puberty Blues – I can’t wait for season 2 of Puberty Blues.

What would be your ultimate stage role?
Jean Valjean in Les Miserables! I love Les Miserables.

Who do you think will win?
I think Rohan or Tom. Rohan has earned it and Tom is someone to develop. Nathan unfortunately has no aspirations for Broadway though, that I found frustating.
